I've tried to search for a few but get mixed opinions on them. Can someone give me a solid recommendation and give a few points as to why it's the best? I tried Malware Defender and a few others, can honestly say I was a bit overwhelmed by them.

I would guess by newb friendly HIPS you mean HIPS that are semi auto? (Less pop ups and helps you take decisions)
You could give Comodo HIPS a try, in it's default configuration it's not as noisy and annoying or Online Armor Free which is extremely quiet after the first boot up. ![]()

I no exactly what you mean by overwhelmed.Although the classical type hips provide a nice security blanket they can be a real pita.
So for a friendly hips, I would also have to Say Comodo or Online Armor or perhaps consider a behavior Blocker like mamutu.

PrivateFirewall is even lighter and quieter than Comodo or Online Armor in my opinion. Worth a try.

Go for Online Armor. It's very strong, light and quiet.

As others have mentioned, Comodo, Online Armor and PrivateFirewall are all viable options and extremely effective solutions.
The default settings on OA and PF are probably a little stronger than Comodo's out of the box but that can be quickly addressed by following Chiron's excellent primer on how to install and setup Comodo's Firewall. (See the thread in this sub-forum.) Whichever one you decide to go with, you can count on getting assistance here as necessary.

What makes Online Armor almost pop up less is their initial setup configuration which scans all files on your computer such as programs, startup entries etc. and then compares it with the database and whitelists known ones, unknown ones then show up so you can choose to whitelist them or not.
![]() BTW that's in the default mode, if you deactivate all auto features you will release the monster hidden inside. (Like MD)

Online Armor is looking promising, how much memory does it use?

I don't think the numbers themselves are going to tell you whether it's going to be a hit or miss for you...the proof will be in the testing on your own particular system. Some folks have had issues with the resource usage while many (or most) others have not. OA is a great choice and well worth the trial imho.

Mamutu/EAM is a Behavior Blocker, not an HIPS.

"Mamutu/EAM is a Behavior Blocker, not an HIPS"
you set it up right you just might change your mind about that, it has the best of both worlds to it. |
