Default PC doesn't recognize Monitor with HDMI cable

Hi,

I have a motherboard Asus P8 Z77-V LX
A video card : EVGA Geforce GTX 570 HD
OS : Windows 7 64 bits
A monitor : Asus VS-238H-P

When I plug the monitor with the cable it come with to the PC everything is alright. The problem is when I unplug that cable and plug an HDMI cable from the monitor to the PC, the monitor screen stay black, nothing appears on it... What's wrong? Did I need to download HDMI driver for my card or change some settings in my bios?

Thanks for your help,

It looks like it could be a driver for HDMI missing on my system...

change the input mode for the monitor to the HDMI port, all monitors are different in this aspect so you will need to check the user manual for your specific monitor.

Thanks! Changing the input from the menu of my monitor solve my issue when in Windows... Now, the only problem I still have is that when starting or rebooting my system my monitor doesn't start until the system get in Windows!?!? What did I have to change so the system and the monitor communicate between them as soon as the system start and not only when the system get into windows?!?!?

Thanks,

no problem. not sure about this one, that behaviour might be hard wired into the monitor and you might not be able to change it. i would try installing/updating the HDMI driver for your graphics chip and see if that helps. you can also try disabling any power saving features the monitor has (see manual) and enabling the 'show startup logo' for the bios if not already enabled.

edit- also try removing all other display cables from the back of the monitor (besides the HDMI one of course)

After a few test, it appears that was coming before the windows desktop appears on my other monitor!?!? If I change in resolution from extend to only use screen one for my desktop, that don't solve the issue but if I also unplug my Samsung syncmaster then everything is ok with my asus monitor connected with HDMI cable!?!?

What configuration I have to change so at the start of the system the signal is send at the monitor connected with the HDMI cable and not the other one (with a VGA connection)?

Thanks,

It seems like the system first try the DVI connexion on my graphic cards and then the HDMI connexion since my Samsung is connected to a dvi port, it is the one the system use and when windows start my Asus (on HDMI) takes over Is there a way to tell the system to first check the HDMI port and then the DVI ports?

try swapping the dvi cable with a vga cable (if your samsung monitor and gfx card has a vga port).

apart from the above suggestion i cant see a way around it apart from flashing the gfx card with a custom bios which i dont recommend doing.

you seem to be using both DVI and VGA when describing the samsung monitor. please clarify which connection type you are using on the non HDMI monitor (samsung)

The samsung is a VGA cable connected to a DVI connection (with an adaptator that came with my video card)...

What I came to understand is :

1. With 1 monitor connected HDMI = No problem!
2. With 2 monitors both connected DVI = No problem!
3. With 2 monitors, one connected HDMI (primary) and one connected DVI (secondary) = problem at startup where the system take the secondary monitor (DVI) has the primary monitor and when windows start then the primary monitor (HDMI) take over has being the primary monitor...

in which case there maybe a way around this but you would have to sacrifice the sound carrying capabilities of the HDMI cable and lower quality display on the asus monitor. PM me if you are interested as we might need to do instant messaging to get anywhere soon with this.

Thank you very much for all your help Treehouse786! In the end, I decided to forget the HDMI and connect back my asus on a DVI port... It is less problems and most of all, it is working!
