Windows Vista automatic defragmenter: runs when you aren't using your pc and you never need to know about it. Graphical defrags were more useful before computer games became widespread so when you got bored with Minesweeper you could always run defrag.

I've tested various Iobit and UDF intelligent file arrangement algorithms and they reliably slowed down performance based on boot-up times, program launch and file searching. It quickly speeds up again after a few accesses but because by that time the files aren't 'intelligently arranged' any more. At the time it seemed pretty funny, there was an explanation though. As I remember it Windows automatically groups together files that it uses in quick succession so artificially arranging files on the basis of some (not soo intelligent) rule like size or frequency of access just makes Windows have to search longer to find what it's looking for. The process that does this for boot up can actually be run manually if you want by entering defrag c: /b in Command Prompt.

I just stumbled upon this little freebie.

It's called SSD Fresh:

For those who have SSD of course.

Puran for XP and built in for Win7.

Nothing more needed for general desktop usage (and I've been through the pain of testing a few defrag tools years ago to find out there was no measurable difference in load times above statistical noise).
I'd only go for a defrag tool with a specific file ordering/placement if the built in tool turns out to be insufficient and the WinXP defrag tool does sometimes struggle for me, but Win7 has always been fine.

Cheers, Nick

I don't mean to sound like a dishonest person (with the name of GW Carver) but with the economy the way it is...how are you going to enforce that....in a perfect world you wouldn't have to do such ....things, but the world in far from perfect.

there are quite a lot of freeware defragmenters that do a very good job.

im currently using defraggler.
I did try the free version of o&o defrag but it runs continuously and i only want an on demand program, pity as it looked a great program.
i didnt install the puran because there are stories on here of it removing restore points plus it is unsigned.

i was simply stating he was advertising piracy there. the lic is good for one pc if thats what he wants to do then so be it but do not come on a board like this where i would say the majority of us are honest and buy lic's and basically say its okay to buy one lic and use it however many times as you want to.. nothing more and not trying to enforce it but i PAY for the proper number of lic's and i hate seeing people do things like that.

I just use the built in windows defragger these days. I have used paid versions in the past like perfectdisk, paragon totaldefrag and system mechanic but I honestly see no noticeable difference between them which is why i just stick with the free one.

I used to use third party defragmenting apps in the past, but Windows 7 built in defragmenter keeps my hard discs defragmented all the time without doing anything and without even noticing it.

And of course, my SSD doesn't need it.

UltimateDefrag in a RAID 0, I like all the custom options.
Also using FancyCache for its Write-Deferred modes...

I always run in Shadow Mode except when installing new software or updating so I only defrag on demand. Auslogics works fine for that. I use to use Diskkeeper, and if I didn't run in a virtual machine or Shadow Mode all the time I would use Diskkeeper.

I don't use any defragmenter, because my system is installed on SSD. I even disabled Windows build-in defragmenter.

Same here, instead of Win7 I use Vista. With Vista I have tried paid and unpaid defragmenters, not only after defragmenting performance didn't improve, but booting and shutting down would take longer.

Hehe

Prices of SSDs are dropping and you really don't have to give an arm and a leg, to buy SSD, big enough to install your system on.
