Feds Shutter Megaupload, Arrest Executives

Of course it's political, the MPAA and RIAA hold a lot of power in the current administration. As far as Warner Brothers, they've always been the more uptight of the labels. Of course having Bronfman as the CEO all that time, possibly the most unqualified of CEOs, didn't help much. As to whether the anti-infringement fanatics are holding back innovation and tech, yes, they are. But so are the patent wars and other complete BS going on now.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation will head to court on Friday to push the federal government to establish a process that will enable law-abiding Megaupload users to get their files back.

A federal judge on Friday declined to pull the plug on 25 million gigabytes of Megaupload data seized when the government shuttered the file-sharing service in January.
But the fate of the gigantic trove of data remains unsettled.

Think for all concerned, and future reference, we'd all like to see some resolution for this 'saga'.

Months after the Megaupload raids and arrests, the fate of the data stored on the site’s 1,103 seized servers is still unclear. Many Megaupload users want their accounts returned because they contain irreplaceable information, but they have been waiting in vain. Today the EFF has filed a motion on behalf of Megaupload user Kyle Goodwin, which demands that the court finally comes up with a solution.

Aside from asking the court to come up with a solution for Megaupload users, the EFF suggests that the court should prescribe procedures and standards on how similar data seizures should be handled in the future.

Kyle Goodwin, and others like him, did nothing but legitimately use a cloud storage service to house legal files – in Kyle’s case, business files, but many others lost access to personal and private information as well. We believe the time has long passed for those folks to get their data back. We hope the court agrees.
