anyway, it needs to extract and build the stuff it needs before it's used for the first time.
initialize plugins, find system fonts, libraries, etc...

same thing with Photoshop, the first time you open it always takes extra-time.

for people with basic need Paint should be enough.

if you don't understand how the Gimp works, or Photoshop for that matter, it's because you don't need it.

The "intermediate" option between Paint and GIMP is Paint.Net, which is small and has many options. It used to be updated frequently, but last update is now seven months old.

But you know, sometimes i want to give some pictures a special touch and Paint is not enough.
Anyways, i already gave up trying those things a long time ago.

But is that what Robin was talking about? Isn't he talking about it crashing (not taking longer to open) the first time only in a new session.

Robin edited his/her post but even without the edit i think we were talking about the same thing/issue.
it's the same symptoms/behaviors.

i could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.lol

What I mean is this: in the first launch after installation, an empty (blank) window appears, no message. If this window is closed from the icon in the bar, the program does not closes normally, but crashes. If the window is not closed, after some time Gimp starts normally.

The empty window should display a message, "Wait..." or something similar, to avoid this situation.

right you are.

it does look like the program just hangs on the first run while it prepares the program for first use.
the first run, it can take about a minute, if you have an old computer like mine.

no problem thereafter though.
