Default Windows 7 and Xbox 360 banned in Germany.

http://gamepolitics.com/2012/05/02/x...banned-germany

Can this be the start of the Linux Revolution? Or will Mac get the push it needs?

I think that SUSE may get a bit of a boost.

I'm a bit confused, to be honest. Both Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player aren't part of Windows 7 E, within the European Union (hence the E).

Last time I checked, Germany was part of it? Sure, as the article* mentioned, OEMs could still add IE to Windows, but that would be a whole different matter.

So, how can someone forbid Windows 7, due to IE and Windows Media Player, when officially they can't be part of Windows 7 E? The maximum they could do is forbid computer manufacturers/OEMs from bundling it.

-edit-

* I was going to provide a link to Arstechnica mentioning that IE could still be added by OEMs. I forgot to provide it. lol Will have to find it again.

Well, I live in the EU & my copy of Win 7 was shipped with (both 64 & 32 bit IE) & WMP. I'm not confused.

Shipped? I apologize if this sounds like a dumb question, but do you mean you bought it in retail stores, provided by an OEM or you ordered it over the Internet?

-edit-

Apparently, due to a change Microsoft made to Windows, they were allowed to reintroduce the standard version in Europe as well.

As the result of our new proposal, as announced on July 31, we will no longer offer E versions of Windows 7 in retail, OEM or other channels. European Economic Community countries will have the same version of Windows 7 as the rest of the world.

Now it makes sense. Considering that I never had put my hands on a Windows 7 E version, I didn't know they had been allowed to provide the Windows 7 standard version as well. The "embargo" against IE/Microsoft was a bit stupid, to be honest.

Bla bla bla, linux revolution, bla bla bla mac bla bla bla.

This is so funny.

The "ban" (rofl) still has no practical effect and will never have.

Quote:
But in a curious cross-national legal development, Motorola was preemptively ordered in April by a U.S. court not to enforce the German ban, were it granted, pending a ruling on a related patent dispute in Seattle. The chances Motorola would act to immediately enforce the German ban are thus nil, says Microsoft. What’s more, Reuters notes that Microsoft has already moved its European distribution operations from Germany to the Netherlands in anticipation of the German ruling.
Quote:
“This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web,” said Microsoft in a statement. ”Motorola is prohibited from acting on today’s decision, and our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola’s broken promise.”

I never saw the '7 E' version either. AFAIK this whole thing was initiated by Opera ASA whinging to the EU. If I remember there was some 'ballot screen' where you could choose to download another browser if you wished. I used IE for what it was invented for; downloading Firefox ...

Hi TheQuest,

Yeah, IE's really useful for downloading Firefox LOL! I think that's why it's shipped with Windows.

Nah, the only way MS would die is if they released some horrible ugly OS aimed at tablets, looked like a giant smartphone & had no start button. That will never happen of course!
