New laptop

My friend wants to buy a new laptop
Her only use for laptop will be web surfing and movie watching
are samsung laptops any good ?
Or should i stick with asus/dell ?

The budget is 35k Indian rupees or apx 680$
There wont be much difference in performance i guess but i want to know in terms of build quality and customer support and satisfaction which one i should choose

For me it's ASUS, Samsung & lastly Dell. But I would get a Toshiba before a Samsung.

I definately agree with ASUS being first, and Dell being last. Usually all ASUS laptops are of very high quality, whereas brands like Dell and HP for example usually make lesser quality consumer products (to cuts costs and sell for less) and save their quality products for their business laptops.

I can't really comment on Toshiba vs Samsung as I have had very little experience with Samsing's laptops. However based on what I have read online, there are some issues with Samsung which will surely be sorted out once they have more experience in designing laptops. I would put ASUS ahead of Toshiba in terms of quality.

Also even though you haven't listed it I can vouch for Compal (not Compaq) for their quality. My main laptop is a Compal and it has survived 5 1/2 years of daily use without a single problem, and I have no plans on replacing it for a least a few more years.

Another brand with very high quality is Clevo (sold as Sager in the US).

Never heard of compal or clevo here in india
I always heard people have high praise for dell but this is the first time im seeing it being placed last in laptops
Then il go forward with asus
any suggestion for asus lappy in this price range ?

I would too - in fact I did. I have had 3 trouble-free years with my Toshiba and have no complaints.

Dell has gone downhill at least from what I've seen in the U.S.. Although I currently have a Dell laptop, but it is a more expensive one and I have had no issues whatsoever. Personal I would only buy the expensive or business class Dell laptops.

At the moment I haven't got the time to look for a laptop. But a few pointers:

CPU speed will not be an issue. Just make sure it has at the very least 2 gigs of RAM, and discrete graphics (i.e. it's own graphics card with it's own RAM) and you really can't go wrong. Battery life may be an issue depending on how much they will be using it when not plugged in - if it is make sure you get one with long battery life. ASUS make a lot of different models which makes it somewhat a confusing choice. However you can check out reviews at http://www.alatest.com to help you decide.

I've only owned 2 laptops, 1 being Acer which has around 1 year and the other one is an Asus which has around 2 years, none have gave me problems so far.

Yes asus has a lot of different models thats why i was asking if some one has a particular series in mind
And in alatest when i go in laptop section and click on brand - more , it gets stuck there , i want to see just asus lappies but am not able to

It's best to do a search for a specific model from the home page.

Also while talking about ASUS. My sister has had her laptop for 9 years, and for a lot of that time has been used daily. The wireless card doesn't work properly anymore, and apart from the hard drive having to be replaced, nothing else has good wrong with it in 9 years.

Acer is a lower quality brand (hence why it is cheap) but apparently their high end models are good.

Ok il do a custom search but in custom search there is no option to filter price..oh well have to do some manual work then

It will be easiest if you find some models in your price range online, and then search for these models in alatest to find the best one.

Notebook/Laptop keyboards are very quirky, they each give a unique feel/experience. Always go to a store and see if you are compatible with 1) keyboard layout 2) key sensitivity 3) the trackpad.

I've found out the hard way about buying over the internet and not trying out myself the keyboard+trackpad first.

I was not gonna buy from the internet anyways..thanx for the tip
Also the person who is gonna buy the laptop will do so in the next month or so , so for now i have enough data i need to buy the laptop

That's really sound advice (most buyers don't think about that - until keyboard/touchpad frustration sets-in)!

And fwiw, my #1 choice would be Lenovo - for top build-quality, highest reliability and the very best keyboards.

The reliability of ASUS and Lenovo Thinkpads are actually pretty close. However Lenovo's Ideapads are of lower quality then Thinkpads.

Well the model i got is one of their cheapest, it's 15" but has netbook internals (Which is what i was looking for because i needed long battery life).
Has worked quite well, the only downside . . . "Netbook" internals . . . The CPU is damn slow when multitasking even though i got one of the fastest "Netbook" units. (AMD E-350, which was the fastest when i got it)

As everyone has there own opinion in the last 5+ years I have 2 Dell 17" XPS Laptops 1 in 2007 and 1 in 2011 and both with Intel and never had a problem with them I even have Windows 7 on the one from 2007 and found that the Vista drivers worked for the Win 7 install!

Asus is my favorite. It is reliable and built with excellent materials.

ASUS has quite a little streak going in the reliability rankings performed by the RESCUECOM Consumer Reliability Report. According to RESCUECOM, ASUS has continued it’s lead as the most reliable manufacturer among computer companies. That includes beating out another high-ranked manufacturer, Apple.

ASUS recorded a score of 416, while Apple came in second at 394, Lenovo third at 314 and Toshiba fourth with a score of 218.

It is from 2009, but I can't see the situation changing dramatically in 2012.
