I think the updating issue, though it only effected Spyware Guard, may have been caused by my D-Link 704P router. It is going back to D-Link for an apparently unrelated issue but as soon as I connected my primary machine to the net as a stand alone I was able to update Spyware Guard to the latest definitions.

Just thought you might like to know.

    P.S. Love the apps.

Hello- I've been evaluating SpywareGuard as the default spyware blocker for a small academic setting. My biggest recommendation is to have more helpful messages for non-technical users. When some bit of software does try to latch itself onto Internet Explorer, SG warns the user about a "BHO" installation (I don't remember the exact wording). BHO is a 3 letter acronym which means absolutely nothing to someone unfamiliar with Windows spyware (i.e. all my users). Something more explanatory like "Program X is trying to install itself into Internet Explorer. This is a common way for spyware and other malware to enter your computer. If you did not request this software, click "Block". If you're sure it is safe, then click "Allow".

Otherwise, I think SpywareGuard is great. The UI is very clean and straightforward, vastly superior to the kitchen sink approach taken by *cough* SpyBot *cough*. Thanks for the hard work!

I haven't had an update for SG since 22/1/2004. It is seriously out of date because Ad-Aware found a pile of stuff it had missed. Are there going to be any regular updates?

    thanks

PS Maybe I have a problem but Live Update does tell me I have the latest definitions (2.2)

Nevertheless, Ad-Aware found 67 instances of 'spyware' that SG had missed. Well, not just SG but Spywatch, Trend Internet Security, Spywareblaster and BPS Spyware remover all of which I have in place.

I have to say that I'm so impressed by this that I have purchased Ad-watch. It is of course possible that Ad-watch may miss things that the others hit. Time will tell.

Am having a problem with my IE homepage being hijacked. Followed your advice to download SpywareGuard 2.2 (actually tried to download Browser Hijack Blaster first, but received a "Page cannot be displayed" message). Download appeared to be successful, but upon running of program I received a window stating "System Error & H80004005 [-2147467259] Unspecified Error". Any advise you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I also use Adaware 6.0 and SpyBot Search & Destroy, but these have not been successful in resolving the Browser hijacking issue.

    Thanks

I've read the entire thread, and myself work in computer repair, so I understand the nature of SpywareGuard's heuristic approach, and that it's not necessary to update so often. But, 5 months does seem like an awfully long time even for that, what with all the new kinds of spyware coming out all the time.

I'm just curious, are there any new def's in the works?

    Thanks
    JC

...and if there aren't, maybe you could just release one update that changes the "Current Definitions" field from 1/22 to say... 6/25, just to appease new users of the program ;-)

I agree holeheartedly...I security oriented software that dos not update...say once a month...makes me feel unsecure...regardless of his effectiveness.

Of course...it's only a feeling that I cannot help...

Well, ad-aware got the boot. I'm now down to a combo of Spybot + Spywareblaster and a very comprehensive Hosts file. I deliberately visited a few sites that would normally overwhelm me with porn links, diallers, and the rest and came out completely unscathed. Impressive. Oh yes, and I use Avant Browser.

Hello. Hey, just down loaded SpywareGuard 2.2 awhile ago and have a problem. It don't work. I don't get any error messages, nothing. Double click on the red SG on my desktop- nothing. I downloaded both patches you had in the Frequently asked questions area of SG and still nothing. I've tried uninstalling it and all I get is "Can not uninstall, program is running. Double click red SG in system tray and press Exit" I can't do that becauce I can't get into it to shut it down. HELP!!!!!!!!! I've tried reloading over SG 2.2 again, but get same message as above. Now, I've got SpywareBlaster (and it works great) SpyBotSearch & Destroy and also Adaware. How can I get SG to work or atleast removed. Thanks for any help. Timberwolf.

Does anyone else have the problem of SG saying the homepage was changed when the only change was the ending forward-slash, which is not required?

    Hey there Frank ,
I dont have. But I told Spybot S&D Not to let my homepage be changed , so there for Spyware blaster dont change nothing, Unless I do it manually. And ever since Ive done that, I havent had no problems. :) I hope this helps. :)

I *think* SG has a bug. I have to turn off the home page protection option becuase it says my homepage was changed from http://www.yahoo.com to http://www.yahoo.com/ (or vice versa)
which is essentially the same domain because the trailing forward-slash is assumed by browsers.

    Hey there Frank,
I ran both of them pages, and they are the same. Sometimes A web addy puts In an extra / and either a HTML or a browser tag. If I aint mistaken . Java cool Could help you more with this matter in his forum than I can. He is the Proud Pappa of the Spyware Gaurd. :) BTW Which IMHO is a GREAT Little Piece of software. Which Works rather Nicely with Spybot S&D. Which is a Great Piece of software too.
If he cant Help you one of the Other Fine Experts here can like Mikey or Paul or Jooske . All of the are GREAT.
    I hope this Helps :)

Hi Armat, and welcome to Wilders,

SpywareGuard offers several types of resident/"background" protection, but it's not a scanner if that's what you're trying to get it to do.

Standard installation puts it into your Startup menu, so it starts up when you start Windows and stays running until you shut down. If you want to access it to change types of protection, or (very rarely) disable protection and shut it down, you do that through the SG icon in the lower-right, not the desktop icon.

If there's any other questions, by all means feel free to ask.

    Best,
    Mike

    Hi Armat, ;)

    Welcome to Wilders'

The two processes that are running for Spyware Guard 2.2 are ... sgbhp.exe and sgmain.exe ... you'll see them running in Windows Task Manager under the processes tab.

SG 2.2 ... protects you from Browser Hijackings and blocks spyware downloads, ... you won't notice it doing anything unless something triggers one of these protections. To reassure yourself that it is in fact protecting you ... change you IE homepage and you'll get and SG popup. ;) ps. you can open SG 2.2 by right-clicking the system tray icon ... be sure to have all protection enabled.

For more information see Javacool's website - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

Another great Javacool program is Spyware Blaster you can learn more about and download it here - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

    HTH, ;)

As always your products are the best! I have been using both "blaster" and "guard" for a little while now and they have really come in handy on more than one occasion!. My porblem is that now that I have upgraded the icon no longer shows on my system tray. I know that it is working because it shows up as active in memory and does the requisite check when I attempted to change my homepage. How come the icon went away. What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks
    P
