After installing VMware Workstation 8, no internet access

By default, LnS protocol filtering blocks vmnetsrv.sys, and that results in a loss of internet access.

My question is: why does blocking that one protocol block all internet access?

P.S. Workstation 8 is on sale at 30% off until November 30, 11:59 PM PST.

Edit: vmnetsrv.sys is actually installed by VirtualPC, not Workstation. But I lost internet access after installing Workstation, and then realized that LnS protocol filtering was causing it.

After some googling, I see that regular network traffic passes through it.
