Today we take another look at facial recognition systems. These can tag friends in Facebook photos or help police identify suspects in the recent riots in Britain. Kurt Roemer is chief security strategist for Citrix Systems in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He says technology makes it easier than ever for governments to identify people.


KURT ROEMER: "Governments can go through and identify, profile and target people, basically in any order. And it is very much a fine line between effective law enforcement and privacy.”


Kristene Unsworth researches information policy at Drexel College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She says she is concerned that governments and police are increasingly using facial recognition software without clearly defined policies.


KRISTENE UNSWORTH: “There is so much secrecy around this information that we don’t really know how these kind of images or other sorts of personal data points are being used, how long the information is being retained. All of those kinds of things. So I guess for me it is an issue of transparency and dialogue.”

believe me, if it were so, a whole lotta things, even more than we can imagine, would be so very much more different that they're today.
but on the other hand, isn't the reason why the things are the way they are is because every single person expects others to take action in order to start to change the things, rather than they,themselves take action.

this song called "i'd love to save the world" from "cj ramone & los gusanos" puts it very well. (though, it's widely but mistakenly known as a song by ramones. and also it's a cover version of the song titled "i'd love to change the world" by "ten years after". but the cover version is much much better, both musicwise & lyricswise)

CCTV and similar systems have helped in the identification and arrest of tens of millions of offenders, social delinquents, criminals and killers the world over.

Privacy ? It`s a mental hypothetical Shangri-La of all that`s nice conjured up in the minds of idealists and "Do Gooders" in a big bad world.

My view ? If Big Brother is gaping down on every aspect of life and helping to secure our safety from the millions of vile scumbags who would not hesitate to rob, injure, kill any one of us or cause violence in public places, plus incredible damage, THEN - TO HELL WITH PRIVACY you can keep it. Hopefully entirely in your mind.

Without these systems, our police and security services would be hamstrung in an age of widespread total social indiscipline, lack of adequate punishment and a general "Could`nt give a toss" attitude adopted by many to injuring and killing other human beings or perpetrating all kinds of damage and pain on the rest of us.

I personally am fed up with people constantly whining and wimping about their PRIVACY. It is unfortunately a "Western sickness".

well, i don't wanna turn this thread into a clash of political beliefs, cuz that'd be way outa this forum's area. so all i'm gonna say is we, the so-called "idealists & do gooders", are looking @ it from a totally different p.o.v.
see, if those criminals, vile scumbags, or whatever you call'em were provided w/ better life standards and weren't condemned to live under such bad standards, then they most probably wouldn't choose to live the current life they do now.
see, if they were given the chance to get education, enough food, decent health care, a decent home, etc.; most of those problems woulda gone away.

But the law is the law and has nothing to do with any of these perfectly justified comments about how nice it would all be - IF. We do not live in Heaven, but unfortunately on Planet Earth, where we are subjected to just about every kind of inconceivable horror that mankind can inflict upon us.

So, if they break the law, then they pay the price. Facial recognition systems are vital in today`s world to assist our police and security forces to identify, arrest and convict these irresponsible criminals and social delinquents who value decent social behaviour and other people`s property, health, happiness, lifestyles and prosperity at ZERO.

If my PRIVACY in the context of this thread is to be completely taken away, then I would rather have personal safety and an orderly society any day than make stupid noises about some hypothetical and impractical if not downright dangerous issue of infringement of PRIVACY.
