No, not scheduled maintenance... The domain name registrar "register.com" was having a bad day. They had a big outage that caused most of the domain names they provide DNS for to be inaccessible for quite a long time. It appears to be getting resolved now.

Wouldn't such an issue affect everyone? Why would it be that Dyn wasn't affected by it?

Was down for me too for a long time, though some of the time I was able to reach it through Ixquick's proxy. For if it happens again, write down WS's IP somewhere or put it in your hosts file: 65.175.38.194 ;)

A lot of people (ISPs) weren't effected. Member levels stayed fairly high online here much of the time. My guess is about 60-70% had access much of the entire time, while others were down the entire time.

The main reason is that the root cause was a DDoS on register.com. They are pretty big and have a lot of different network pipes and server locations. Some circuits/servers were overwhelmed and others were still functional, though heavily loaded. Depending upon what DNS servers a person was using, those might or might not have had a clean connection to register.com. If they did, access was available. If not, no or little access was available.

For myself, I've always had our IP address in my hosts file because there have been previous DNS outages, even though the forum and its hosting company were fully available and ready to be accessed. It's a pity to not get to a website that is up and running just because the name can't be converted to an IP address on your system.

    Code:
    65.175.38.194	wilderssecurity.com
    65.175.38.194	www.wilderssecurity.com

Been down since yesterday afternoon. Kept trying different operating systems, different browsers.
Geesh. Never knew I was so addicted!
    Thanks LWM for the explanations.

Is there any work around for a Linux user (no hosts file)?

On Linux, the Hosts file is usually located in /etc as: /etc/hosts

It works the same way as on Windows.

Now that explains why I have not been able to get on all day, I was about to blame PCAV web guard or ClearCloud nice to have it back online.

In fact, on Windows, the hosts file is also under \etc\hosts, but deeper inside the windows directory, which kind of shows the legacy of where it all cometh from :)

    Regards,
    Mrk
