As a beta tester from the beginning for Vipre, this will indicate the versions that I have tried/tested earlier in the year. :)

20$ for more than 3 PCs, right? That's a steal.

If they do every year such big bargains on Black Friday and it remains light and good (the installer is only 15MB), i predict i will be grabbing it regularly. :D

Anyway, for now i will stay with F-Secure, i will leave Vipre license for end of December. Usually by then most promos are out and you can plan better what to do.

I went ahead and grabbed a license too. Sunbelt has always been a pretty top notch outfit and they now have Inspector Mike helping with Vipre's development. Also to be honest its a new toy and you know about boys and their toys... :D

since they have no detection rating & have been out awhile to have been tested I'll save my 10bucks, I don't like paying for something I know nothing about, yea a lot of talkbut untill I see something concrete in ratings I'll pass, I can't see paying for an unknown...

Personally I could not recommend Vipre any more. Excellent anti virus product.

I reckon it is a bit of a "dark horse" in detection levels at the moment.

I can see no real proof any where of actual detection levels compared to most other products.

If detection is as good as avira, norton kaspersky etc, it could be a viable alternative.

I await with both eyes wide open.

Probably its detection is inferior to Avira... Fortunately, not all people need something as potent as Avira. And that's where you make your calculated risk decision.

Well, they 're not AV-Comparatives or AV.Test org (not that i particularly care about test labs, but many do), but i think if you put them all together they do say something.

So, ok, it may not be Avira. When i tried it , it had 2 false positives, which , in VB100 for example would be enough to make it "fail".

Anyway, if you ask me, it's seems that it's at least at levels of Trend Micro. Which in USA costs 40$ and in Europe many people use it, because it has built a name by bundling the AV with motherboards. So you get Vipre for 10$.

For me, the risk assessment says it's a bargain. Now, if someone doesn't feel comfortable with anything less than Avira/KAV, ok, that's another story.

I wanted to trial Vipre today but, does anyone know if it will run on 64 bit machines?

The download page for the trial shows.

Yes, it works on 64bit. From the FAQ (a bit old, since it doesn't mention Win7, but...):

And they are also in Microsoft's list for Win7 compatible antiviruses:

VIPRE realtime also flags Panda USB Vaccine when it tries to vaccinate a drive in background. You have to put it in exceptions to make it them both work in tandem.
Apart from that I had once ntkrnl being flagged as rootkit. It was FP which was quickly corrected by Sunbelt though.

I had another false positive on demand. A game mod file. Checked it at Virus Total, it's clean. Not that i had much doubt, because it comes from a known modder.

My main issues with Vipre aren't FP.

    - On demand you can't select "enable rootkit detection" on Win7x64. So you aren't protected against rootkits i presume.

    - I am not sure why there is an option for "automatic updates", then another option for "Automatic internet access", which "controls if Vipre automatically receives updates and information from and sends risk data to Sunbelt Software via the internet". If you disable the second, it seems that you can't get automatic updates....

Because, i don't want to send "automatically" "risk data" to Sunbelt. If i want to send a file, i can send it manually. Why tie the automatic updates to that?

And then you have Threatnet, where you share "risk information". How is that different than "risk data" i don't know.

Anyway, other than that, it's working fine.

    Here's my input (minor request):

    1. If you scroll your mouse to the VIPRE tray icon, it displays the date and time of the latest signature. I prefer the time to be in sync with my PC time rather than Sunbelt's central time.

    2. False Postive: I've also run into 1 FP which I quarantined. Is there a way to report the FP via VIPRE GUI?

Other than this, it runs light and so far I'm happy. :)
