As predicted last month, the IEEE has finally approved the 802.11n high-throughput wireless LAN standard.

Finalization of the new wireless networking standard--which is capable of delivering throughput speeds up to 300 megabits per second (and even higher)--took exactly seven years from the day it was conceived, or six years from the first draft version. The standard has been through a dozen or so draft versions.

In time for the holiday season. Time for manufacturs to start pushing out N-products.

And now, we can expect and DEMAND that 11n adapters and APs from Linksys, D-Link, NetGear, ABC and XYZ are 100% compatible with each other - it should not be necessary for us to recommend all 11n devices on a given network be from the same maker.

In theory, anyway.

Well, if I didn't build my own, I would own Dell. For factory built systems, they are the least of the evils.

Most the draft N 2.0 will handle is 300mbps but really they're only 150mbps.
Standard N suppose to be 600mbps more like 450mbps when the first Standard N routers should appear for home users. So all those draft N 2.0 Wireless Routers, PCMICA, USB 2.0, PCI-E, PCI and onboard just not going to be anything better than 150mbps.

I've repaired a lot of them, and own two myself. Easy to repair and have to them last longer then they were suppose too. I have two latitude d600 series which I've modded to 40GB HDD spin 7,200 rpms, max the ram, changed out the MPU to the max speed and added 802.11n. Avoid the c600 series, I've fixed to many in my years of service, but the latest models aren't that bad.
