egui.exe and interactive firewall

I switched back to ESS a few days ago to see if any of the problems I had been having were solved. It mostly runs pretty well, but I am having a problem with egui.exe crashing when the firewall prompts come up. This has happened twice in the last 3 days. Running Vista x64.

I'm not sure what you mean by Microsoft Protection Service. Also as I hadn't specified earlier, this is a random issue. Most of the time it seems to work fine.

In the list of Services the Micosoft Protection Service is started "Automatically".

It's part of the Vista firewall and disabling it may help. This will explain the steps to do so.

It may be listed by it's internal name "MSMPSVC". The SysInspector scan will show it if you search "Firewall" in the log.

But how can the OP kill the service you cited, if it's not under services.msc?

I don't have ESS loaded at the moment, but I'm still very interested in:

1. how MPSSVC can be disabled, as you recommend, given that it's not listed under services.msc
2. why disabling the service will help the intermittent egui.exe crash issue flagged by the OP

I never said that it would help, I asked if it would because he mentioned the issue was noticed "when the firewall prompts come up". As that Service is firewall related and running I took a shot.

...but wouldn't this not be running, presumably, if the OP is running ESS, the Windows firewall and service you mention has already been disabled?

Not trying to interrogate - just interested and trying to understand...

No problem at all. The firewall is supposed to be disabled when ESS installs but that service is always still set to "Automatic" and "Running".

Googling it shows that Windows OneCare also uses it and maybe it's by design that it's not disabled with the firewall.

OK - I was (wrongly) assuming that either the ESS installer or the OP would have already disabled the Windows firewall, so I couldn't see what you were getting at.

While disabling the Windows Firewall service may seem a logical thing to do, it lists a dependency of "Windows Event Collector" (depends on the firewall service). If this actually does help I hope it gives the development team at ESET some direction in figuring out how to fix it. I am not in to service tweaking as it causes more problems than it solves. Also disabling this service would stop the Windows Firewall from being re-enabled when a 3rd party firewall is uninstalled until the service is manually restarted. I appreciate the suggestion, just wanted to point out the possible cons.
