I am using safe XP and XP antispy for windows hardening. I wonder do I need following or not?

    - WWDC( Windows worm doors cleaners)
    - Seconfig( either of the two is needed I think, which one is better?).
    - Bug off

    Thanks.

BugOff disable things which are still unpatched.
Seconfig seems better/more complete than WWDC. I will ask Stem about it.
Having no listening services on vulnerable ports is a nice add-on:
-If you don´t like firewalls and have a router.
-If your firewall is disabled, you can´t be exploited.

Do I need WWDc and Seconfig both at a time. As I read either one will suffice.

Choose whatever you prefer. I´ve asked Stem about Seconfig, so he will give some feedback to us when he finds some spare time.

Seconfig disables the same things as WWDC plus more.

Thanks. In that case Seconfig is enough.

Seconfig XP does not work on Vista and it does not show open ports like WWDC does.
WWDC disables ports 49152, 49153, 49154 on Vista. I can not imagine my PC without it.

i havent tried it on Vista but ill take your word for it.

as for open ports, if u click on Status, Seconfig can tell u if ports 135, 137-139, and 445 are closed or open. and lastly, Seconfig can disable NetBIOS but i dont if in effect it also closes ports 49152, 49153, and 49154.

I tried both of these earlier today. WWDC seems buggy, and it was reporting that services were enabled that I had just disabled using Seconfig XP. My vote goes to Seconfig XP.

When I disable services, set up policies and restart PC only those 3 + 135 are open.
When I click in WWDC to disable NetBIOS and restart, they will get closed, so it works.
No idea, why it affects those ports. I have disabled NT in network connection settings too.
So I have opened only port 135 and since that one is opened only locally it does not matter.

    Hello,

Using all these patchers means one thing - breaking down functionality. Too often, people will tweak their machines down - irrecoverably. They will hit a bump one day and never be able to relate back to the original problem

Second, disabling agl or netbios. Recommended. Not. It seems tweakers have never heard of the word sharing. I want to see all those tweakers maintain a multi-PC multi-OS network.

Third, there's no security benefit to all these patches. To protect against what? IE exploits? Don't use IE. Simple. Got a firewall? Problems solved.

That is true, it happens, but that is the point of tweaking to lean more about everything.
Eg if I would never tweaked Windows, I would not even know, what is registry or services.
I know, how to solve a few problems, so I can help others, since I know, what causes them.
Also my PC is faster & safer thanks to all those tweaks and everything works as I want it to.
If someone uses other p2p like torrents or DC, why should he keep Windows sharing?
If someone comes home via front door, why no to lock the back door, just to be safe?
Nope, at least 25% xp updates fixes windows vulnerabilites exploitable via NetBIOS and etc.
Using those patches will result, that Windows security software is not needed even using IE.
Also, a user is protected against zero day exploits, since he can survive without win updates.

So we have now two views. Mrk has a point. Theses tweaks sometimes prove a big trouble. I am not expert in these issues. I want to know what other users suggest here.

I tried XP-Antispy and Safe XP for the first time yesterday, after reading this.
Seconfig doesn't seem to provide info, so it's only good for those who get it.
XP-Antispy provides good info. SafeXP seems to aswell, but i didn't "apply" yet. If it provides info, it's good for me, you'll know where to look for when something doesn't work, or you got it the first time. BUT:
I don't see myself using more than two. Maybe just one. Having more does seem trouble: Where's the issue? click, click, click click clicko_O

If i don't understand some option, i leave it be. Like the other discussion about prefetch - huh? - no go.

    One or two at max.

By the way, XP-Antispy and SafeXP seem to do much of the same. Which one does more/better? I think i'll keep only one. TIA

I use SafeXP with no problem but it doesnt close any ports....from what i can see Antispy doesnt either. I looked at WWDC a while ago but got put off by talk of commandline etc. Not being that tec savvy I prefer a Windows interface

Using more than 1 is not really recommened, because each can use different tweaks for the same settings. I copied reg tweaks from SafeXP, so I know, that SafeXP uses Syn Attack Protect set to 1 and the other soft can set it to 2, which is safer, but can be problematic.
