I have the impression that Avira Free users are getting infected left, right and center (far more often than other popular freebies let in) if reviews and various forum posts are anything to go by. With the exception of AVC real world tests, lab or mag tests don't translate well to the real life; for example, Eset always gets mediocre results in after-the-fact detection tests, but its online scanner is often recommended on good malware removal sites with great success. Besides, I doubt they are serious about improving the free version, because they've already proven their caliber by getting their paid product back to the top. They had four months; if they really cared, a toned down cloud or something would have been implemented long ago.
the cloud(APC Technology) will come to the Avira Free. However,it may take a bit long time until the Free version can get it. Hopefully can implement it at early of Q1-2014(according to Stefan)
Just some quick questions about the free version: - does it still display ads? - does it require annual registration? - does it trow lots of pop-ups asking stuff? - is there any major drawback in installing Avira free to a Non-Tech-Savvy person? Thanks in advance.
Reviews of the free product are generally good on the whole. Every Av product forum shows infected users, and tests where the 2014 version is used of which there are only a few so far show improved scores. I site your original post in this thread which contains a link to the latest results on AVC using the 2014 version which if you examine previous real world tests where the 2013 version of Avira is used the score is not as good as the 2014 version.https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=357138
No, no, no and no. If you update your system and programs (especially the ones using the net) often enough and use common sense, you can install Avira free and forget all about it.
I've stumbled upon too much negative feedback even about the free 2014 version, but wouldn't rule out the possibility that it's significantly better than the 2013 one at the very least. Maybe we just read completely different reviews. You do realize they always test the paid product, not free, or am I missing something? Where are the real-world tests using Avira free?
I wonder how sites like downloadcrew are handled? That would be great get it cheaper. I like Avira and I like the fact they are doing that now. thank you for letting us know.
The web guard is the chief difference in the paid over the free so I stand by my contention that the free would pass at AVC.

i agree about the new lic'ing. im hoping stephan can answer something though. if we have previous NON activated 3pc lic's are thoe still good for the 3pc's only or will they work like the newer ones do for multiple devices as stated in the faq. also with the lic's we can buy from download crew or similar will those act like the faq states now for multiple devices or are they only good for the amount of pc's stated i.e. 1 or 3 etc. ? if they are good for multiple pc's as the faq states ill be honest this could be a new staple for my clients along with my other top 2 sellers...please let me know
Does Avira Free use the ProActive module? Does it work with 32 and 64 bit operating systems? I appreciate that they stopped the whole ad crap.
AFAIK, no. Paid: General : Threat Categories / Advanced Protection / Password / Security / etc http://techblog.avira.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/config-center.png ---- Free: General : Threat Categories / Advanced Protection / Password / Security / etc http://i1-win.softpedia-static.com/screenshots/AntiVir-Personal-Edition_20.png?1386850916 =
Thanks. As you can see I edited my post as I decided I did not want to put you on the spot, but I wasn't quick enough.
what I would like to know is what happens if you used the key on lets say 5 pc's after I renew do I need to go to all the PC's and renew or register each PC with a new key? that would suck. but would be nice if Avira would check my account and update the key status. maybe
