Haven't you updated yet to V14? You really ought to try it, it is the lightest Avira so far, and according to AV Comparatives detection has improved as well...

They are license for v13, will not stay there for long.
IMHO, buy it now and add the new license to the current one or use it when the current expires.

Yes, it is very light except on my PC the right-click scan is extremely slow to initiate and takes about 300 MB for a small folder even. Maybe it's a Win 8.1 issue, I don't know.

zerotox, now it is slow because the loading of the VDF is still not optimized. We are about to release a new VDF format that will create a local copy that is optimized for fast loading which will improve the starting time of Avira alot.

Would have said it was before it got good, but then I saw the August AVT results.

Who gives a damn about AVT anyways? AVC is the closest thing to the best of the bunch, and at least amateur/low-profile tests don't pretend to be "it" when they're far from that unlike AVT.

But even the recent tests posted on av-test.org used the older versions of Avira without the new cloud-detecting modules.

However, the recent real-protection test (October) on av-comparatives used the new modules, hence the significant improvement in detection.

Due to the way how AV-Test publishes their results, it will be some time until you can see the improvements in detection for their test.
The combined Nov+Dec results published in Jan 2014 will show improvements I think.

Unfortunately(and as I had mentioned before) Avira scan initiation takes about 10 seconds to start(no matter it is a manual r click scan, or It is a MiniScan after a detection)... But when it starts it is fast(comparing to others)
As I can remember this slowness has been started since V10.
Lets hope it will become faster(which can make Avira more responsive)

7anon, yes we are investigating the slow down but I think it is not related to 14.0.1.719 as users were reporting issues long before that update.

    Thanks for your reply.

The links was few examples for the slow start, I didn't say that is a bug on 14.0.1.719 only.

I'm waiting to see if and when it will auto update. I'm not in a hurry because I gather from Stephan's posts that there are a few issues to work out. For example the reported slow down.

I am waiting for a long time. Still in version 14.0.0.383. If its not going to update in another 1 month I am changing my antivirus. Can't wait forever to get a program update.

The reported slowdown is with Windows 8.1 which is causing pains to a lot of AVs, it should be fine with Windows 7, and as I said V14 is absolutely flawless with my Windows 8 machine. I personally wouldn't wait too long as V14 has better detection than V13, but then again I'm not really urging you.

Do you really think that is a serious reason to change your AV (if you are satisfied with the rest: detection rate, load, etc) ?
    ----------
You don't have to wait even for a minute.

Download the latest version (the offline installer) ->
    run the installer ->
during the installation process select the "Repair/update" option ->
    done!

Note: Your configuration settings will remain the same.

So I upgraded my version using avira's latest installer and everything went good. After install, around 10MB of vdf and dat files got updated. So what's wrong in using an old version ? I was receiving updates every 6 hrs and it was up-to date. But installing a new version downloaded 10MB of definitions.

No offence taken even if you were urging me. I like your enthusiasm. By the way I think to know but I'd like to double check on what steps I need to take to avoid installing The ASK toolbar in the paid product if I don't wait for auto update and do a clean manual install
