When I get the chance I hope to try scientific to comapre it to this:-

    http://li.nux.ro/stella/

Been running Stella for a week now on my ancient P4 and it's nay on perfect. It's a desktop orientated clone of centos with added non-free repos. I just had to install a couple of apps that make my machine useful. All the essentials that I need appear to work, in no particular order:-

    Stability - check
    Long term support - check
    Flash - check
    Multimedia - check
Scanner / printer combo - check
    Nvidia driver - check
Suspend / resume everytime - check
    Infinality font rendering - check
Easy access to third party software - check
Up to date libreoffice - check

Anyone looking to escape the endless updating, tinkering, breaking, ever changing madness that is most of the desktop linux distros would do well to give Stella a try and, no doubt scientific isn't much different. In fact I may well swap out my working debian install for Stella I love it that much.

i disable all repo and update but why i am getting old kernel over new

its showing 2.6.32-131.6.1.el6.x86_64 over latest one o_O

one also same nvidia problem even with new 2.95 roll back but now virtual box not working and nvidia compiz now working rest all smooth :D

    i guss i need a fresh install :D

this time i try cent os and install only needed 1 or 2 repo not mixing it again

what are recommended repos for cent os i need one which is enough for basic stuff like vlc nvidia

    also is anyone tried stella

Check my post mack. To add to it, i've now adopted stella as my main desktop os as it's been flawless for me.

The desktop repo has multimedia, firmware, etc. I'm sure there's everything you would need. Also, Nux is really helpful and is open to package requests. Give stella a try, you will not be disappointed.

dracut ? There is some info here, i suppose you can use it for blacklisting drivers (like nouveau). Have not gone into it myself.
    http://people.redhat.com/harald/dracut.html#id489921
    http://blog.fpmurphy.com/2009/11/fedora-12-dracut.htm

What gcc version do you get ?

    cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 295.20 Mon Feb 6 21:07:30 PST 2012
GCC version: gcc version 4.4.6 20110731 (Red Hat 4.4.6-3) (GCC)

Try maybe updating like this ?
    su -c "yum update --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=elrepo"

Not really qualified to help, maybe someone can help mack_guy with those nvidia problems ?

The ISO I'm downloading is named Stella6.2_i386.TEST12.iso.
    It's still in development mode?

One last suggestion before you give up - remove the xorg.conf file completely.
Or rather move it aside. Boot. Get into vesa desktop. Download, recompile what is needed, restore xorg, restart x.

    Mack_Guy,
I made a post over at the Scientific Linux forum concerning manually installing nvidia drivers that works very well. It's all I use for either SL6, CentOS6, or Ubuntu (the Ubuntu procedure is slightly different)....

    http://scientificlinuxforum.org/index.php?showtopic=1109

If you have any questions about the procedure then please ask away. I'll be glad to help.

    Later...

Yes it's still in development apparently. However, it's still more stable than most "stable" distros.

    thanks mrk for support

very strange mrk there is no xorg file anyways i format and reinstall i wait little more and read i cant go for 4th time formate :D

thanks Trespasser i checking your link and reading and gettting my self little educated :D

thanks ocky for support yes i go with redhat even i have to drop nvidia proprietary driver as honest i never notice untill today Nouveau kinda same or Nouveau little better when playing movie on old card which is good thing :D

by that time i stick with default Nouveau drivers honestly speaking i dont use 3d stuff games ...........compiz etc specially on fedora/redhat

so i still wait a little while and read all before start again on Trespasser link :)

one more thing i wonder why

i have 8600gt old card and CRT monitor with 600*800 resolution with antiglare screen

    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=nouveau_comp_2011&num=16

    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=nouveau_comp_2011&num=15

if you see above not much diffrence on card 8600gt strange

and when compare it to linux mint 12 nvidia 280 driver which only the one driver that could work on my old card on mint 12 default where on second mint 10 never go above 275 ........

Nouveau more smoother lighter and movie watching much much better

can anyone put more light on how good Nouveau driver is when its comes to stability heat sensors and video playing .....etc

edit: if you see 8600gts its better in Nouveau driver then NVIDIA driver
