Eh, it completely depends on what it was. If it was some rootkit or something, then he was an idiot. If it was some file infector that really didn't "expose" him, I could see that. Then again, knowing people like that as well as knowing the pro types..the guy was likely just a knowledgeable idiot :D Plenty of them out there as well. They know the ins and outs, but they lack common sense. Kind of like the "book smart" who lack street smarts.

Why should a hacker care more than a normal person? lol It's not like he's more of a target, they all use VPN's etc to protect themselves.

Direct attacks on users aren't likely. They know that =p

And I think the security researches do it as a learning experience/ cause that's just what they enjoy.

Well, I do know he likes to fish, so maybe he prioritizes. ;)
He's not dumb in that he holds a pretty responsible job in the public sector.
And he knows his way around computers, I'd say as well as most anyone here.
It was just a cavalier attitude about having a virus on his computer.
It's hard for me to comprehend... that he would be so dismissive about it. :)

True that they all hide pretty damn well. In their situation, the biggest threat most often comes from their own kind and not the cops. I will say that long ago I knew a hacker that hacked "naked", lol. He lasted a while, actually, but he never got into the "big time". Pissed off one of his enemies and got thoroughly taken to the digital woodshed, lol.

Yep, that's how Charlie Miller approaches it. Just for fun, in his off time. Lots of these men and women make a hobby of it outside of their normal job.

Some of them get too big for their britches and get their heads so full of hot air that it floats clean off their shoulders, hehe. That's what has happened to some members of Anon as of late ;)

A couple of months ago, I asked Steve on Twitter what av/firewall combo he uses, this was his response:

This didn't surprise me as Steve is very meticulous and would never click on anything remotely suspicious. He also uses Firefox with NoScript and other security add-ons like Certificate Patrol. Plus, I'm guessing his network is locked down pretty hard.

You asked him what av/firewall combo he uses, and he responded, "None or either", which sounds like he is saying he doesn't or he does, both. No?

Come on... That one is easy...

    Ilya Rabinovich = Sandboxie
    Marcin Kleczynski = SUPERAntispyware
Ondřej Vlček and Vincent Steckler = AVG
    Joe Jaroch = Trusteer Rapport

P.S: Just kidding folks. But, it would be quite something, wouldn't it? :argh:

    Hi The Seeker,

"None or either" still sounds to me like he is telling you he uses both options... sometimes he doesn't use an av/firewall, and sometimes he does use an av or a firewall.
Maybe he is being purposefully evasive. Shrug. :doubt:

And something else I'd like to know...

I'd like to know if she even can turn on her computer :D Celebs aren't likely to have home systems...since they are hardly ever home. Their access is usually via iPhones and Blackberries, some iPads. And with as many celeb hacks that have been going on, my faith in their abilities to secure what they do have is very, very low.
