The lnk fix screws up the icons in the tray, in 64bit Windows 7, quite royally.
The icons are required there, because some of the interactions and control require access to the icons.

Since it doesn't permit proper use of my system, I unchecked the .lnk fix option.

The LNK fix interferes with the icons in my Start Menu 7 program.

We terminate and restart the Windows Shell (explorer.exe). This ensures the Shell te reload the Shell Namespace Handlers (like the Icon Handler) and thus enables the LNK Exploit Protection. If thrid party software has a problem with a restarting Shell then a User logoff / logon will solve the problem with that software.

We chose to restart the Windows Shell in favor of a reboot.

I'm sorry but logging off and back on didn't solve the problem with StartMenu7 showing the icons. I unclicked the HMP LNK fix and then logged off and on and the icons were back to normal.

If you have some custom handler then it won't get called. But you should not be able to enable LNK Exploit Protection since we don't allow enabling it when a custom Icon Handler is installed. Strange.

Perhaps you can try a solution from our partner G Data here.

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

In Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, I lost the Taskbar icons for Windows Defender and for Acronis Drive Monitor, with applying the Hitman Pro LNK exploit protection. If I'm not mistaken, those icons did not come back with logging off and back in (although I'm not sure I remember correctly), but a reboot did fix it.
Justenough, did you try a reboot to repair those lost icons after applying the Hitman Pro LNK exploit protection? Or only the logging off and back on?

Yes I rebooted a couple of times. I have turned off StartMenu7 and will write the author about this problem. I activated the HMP LNK fix, no problem with computer icons.

    Thanks very much, Justenough,
In your previous posts, I overlooked the fact that you were mentioning StartMenu7. Stupidly, I thought you were mentioning the Windows 7 Taskbar. My mistake. ;-)
Good to know turning off StartMenu7 fixed the problem.

Right, it was just StartMenu7, the regular system is not having a problem with the LNK fix. I expect the guy behind StartMenu7 will get it to work, he has been on top of any problems so far.

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

I tried rebooting, but still had some lost icons in the taskbar.

I got it to work, by closing everything I could before activating the .lnk fix. I then opened Hitman Pro, activated the fix, closed Hitman Pro, and shut the computer down. When I restarted the computer, everything was working okay.

I'm also curious about the question asked by someone else. Is it advisable to uncheck the Hitman fix before a Windows upgrade, in case the upgrade addresses the same problem?

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

The only thing that is changed on the computer is the Shell Icon Handler on .LNK and .PIF files. Now Microsoft's Fix-it, Sophos and G Data's tools work the same, they also replace the Icon Handler. I assume Microsoft won't block the patch when it detects a custom handler, that would be too silly as it would block its own Fix-it users from receiving the patch.

So I assume everybody will receive the patch, even if you have a custom Icon Handler. The patch will most likely be an update of the shell32.dll file.

Since we don't know yet how to recognize the patch we will update Hitman Pro when Microsoft's patch is released and disable the LNK Exploit Protection when the updated shell32.dll is detected.

So as a Hitman Pro user you do not need to do anything. Just wait for Hitman Pro's update and Microsoft's patch. It will all go automatically.

Just had an security update for Windows 7 x64 (KB2286198 = LNK exploit).
Now let's see what Hitman Pro will do, in the settings Protection against LNK exploit is still enabled. If I disable it Hitman Pro notifies me I am vulnerable to attacks.

Hitman Pro will still tell you your computer is vulnerable. As Hitman Pro has no way to identify the patch yet as it just came available (45 minutes ago). We will release an update of Hitman Pro tonight that adds detection of Microsoft's patch. So far I have counted at least 20 different Shell32.dll files. Nightmare.

Hitman Pro will automatically update to the new build (with detection of Microsoft's patch) when available.

Got a reply from StartMenu7 about icons missing with HMP LNK fix. "You know more about this than I do." I had to laugh, since I know next to nothing. Luckily the program now works fine with Microsoft's update.

I'm glad Microsoft got the patch out at least. And well done Surfright for vaccinating me (and us, the users) while MS were being slow!

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

    build 109 is out:

    Build 109 (2010-08-03)

    * Added universal detection of the LNK vulnerability.
    * Added automatic disabling of the Hitman Pro LNK Exploit Protection when Windows is not vulnerable for attacks abusing the LNK vulnerability. Ex. when Security Update KB2286198 (MS10-046) is installed.
Note: Since Microsoft no longer supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP RTM, SP1 and SP2, the Hitman Pro LNK Exploit Protection remains available for these operating systems.

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

The universal detection of the LNK vulnerability works by trying to trigger the LNK exploit. If so, the LNK Exploit Protection is offered.

This way Hitman Pro can detect custom shell32.dll patches or the official MS10-046 patch.

It was impossible to verify the shell32.dll by DLL version since there were simply too many.
