I have been having this problem recently where whenever I get a url wrong, or even certain url's right, it goes to a search site called "best-search.info". I have a completely updated Spybot S&D and it has done nothing to help it. Before I download and post a HijackThis! Log to peruse, i was just wondering if anyone were familiar with the problem already and knew what to do.

    Download CWShredder
    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Unzip...Run it......press "Fix", follow its prompts & instructions.. press 'Next', and allow it to fix all it finds.
    reboot......
then, if you haven't yet... download HijackThis from
    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe
to a folder of your choice..create a new one if you like....doubleclick to open."Scan"...then "Save Log"...when it opens in notepad.......copy (edit..select all..copy) & paste (CTRL-V) the log into your next reply.......

Hey, I am following the steps right now, but I cannot find the folder SharedTaskScheduler on the Registry Editor Navigation Tree. I found a SharedDLLs, is that the same thing?

I also noticed that there is a quick redirect to a nkvd when the mispelled url is entered, but I cannot find any references to it in my HijackThis! Log for r1 or r0.

rebot and post a new log and we'll start again.

but please either register or give yourself a distinctive name otherwise it's getting confusing with the amount of unregistered guests all having the same problem

before fixing anything please copy & zip and send these 3 files to me for checking please
    send to submit@thespykiller.co.uk

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sdmod.exe
    C:\Program Files\Pop Blocker\Updated.dll
    C:\Program Files\PopUp Killer\PopUpKiller.EXE
    and now

because this pest uses otherwise legitimate names and dlls from pop up blockers I am going to treat all of them as suspect and remove any dll or exe with a pop up connection to hopefully make sure we get it. You can always redownload a new one fter it's all cleaned up
    First download CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Syscm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mtwirl32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mshelper.dll

    and Delete these folders

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\
    C:\Program Files\Ultimate Popup Killer\
    C:\Program Files\PopUp Killer
    C:\Program Files\Pop Blocker

    Now Run CWShredder
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Now as CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then reboot &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R287 11.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

  10. Hey, before I got started, I gave AdAware a quick spin, ran the program, and now the problem is gone. I still cannot seem to get to the two websites that I had redirections on, but I suspect that might be the problem of the website and not because of an infection. I still sent those three files for review however. And just to make sure I am completely clean of any traces or anything, here is my new Hijack log for review or double checking. I would like to thank you for all the help provided so far and ahead of now.

As you obviously didn't do any of what I said, as a result of not fixing the C:\WINDOWS\System32\Syscm.exe which is a new version of winpup is still infecting you and the sdmod.exe has mutated into HELLS.exe and still doing it's naughty deeds

the updated toolbar entry C:\Program Files\Pop Blocker\Updated.dll, might or might not be genuine, but I am sending it on to be analysed further to check

So for now we will leave it and all the other blockers taht you feel are OK, except the osbourne tech which we know to be bad

Please try and copy the hells.exe file and send it to me so we can find out what it actually is.

if when you reboot into safe modse it isn't there look at the new hjt scan you will take. it will be in the same place in the log between
the tomcat & AIM entries. so what ever is in that spot fix and delete the cooresponding file, but please copy & send that file to me first, before deleting

As embarrassing as it is to admit, I am having difficulty accessing Safe Mode right now. I tried the usual f8 on boot up, but it is not working well, and the link you provided is not working. Since i do not want to misfollow your directions, is there any help you could offer for getting into Safe mode?

  13. Sorry, that was me, I just forgot to fix the name
