I'm wondering about "system hardening" tools.

As these seem to be around the firewall/networking area I thought I'd ask about them here.

In general are they still needed ?
Are there still serious vunerabilities in XP networking ?

What does Seconfig XP try and do ?
Is there any risk to using Seconfig XP ?

Just google Seconfig XP ... the first listing will tell you what it does. Definitely not a substitute for a well configured firewall.

there's good hardening tools in my sig. Seconfig XP isn't always running as such, it is just a tool which modifies some of XP's settings by closing and disabling vulnerable ports . Windows worm cleaner does the same thing only different ports.

    Thanks for the responses.

I like to know what security tweaks I'm making so trying to see if I need to use say Seconfig at all.

As far I can see , these ports are normally used by Windows Services , and are used when connected to a LAN.

    Is this correct ?

If I use Windows XP Firewall -
can I configure it to block these ports ?

If I use BlackVipers Windows Services "SAFE" Settings , does it block these ports ?
