The gamble here is will people pay more or walk away? This could end up being a net loss. There are too many other options.
Announced a while back in Canada too. I wonder if it's also to stop people from cancelling and resuming as they switch services, because now they won't be able to buy back in at the mid-tier "1 user" rate. I don't know about that. I think it shows that they can make more from ad revenue than they can from charging an extra few dollars. That's still a ton of money, even if it didn't make investors happy.
1.49bn is certainly a lot of spondoolies, although if it wasn't enough for the investors it must have caused some financial problems for Netflix.
This. Eventually we will get maybe free AD tier and then Premium for $30 or more. Basically the only reason to use Netflix was to avoid ADs on cable and this slowly fades away.
Yes I agree, I think it makes sense, apparently they can make quite a few bucks on ad revenue. From what I understood, ad based streaming services like Tubi and Freevee are also quite succesful. And I have been watching quite a lot of movies on YouTube lately, the ads are not that annoying and you can even skip them sometimes, never understood this, but apparently Alphabet/Google earns so much it can afford to do so.
I keep trying Tubi here and there, but then I forget about it, sometimes even in the middle of a movie. I just haven't found enough there to keep my interest. I must admit I was about to quit Netflix for a few months due to lack of interesting content, but this caused me to reconsider, at least for a while.
I didn't fully understand, are you saying that you find the ads annoying on Tubi? And I was actually shocked to see that almost all good content is available on services like Tubi. But that's probably because I'm mostly into older movies, I have even made a list of my favorites ones, currently at 956 titles, see links. In the past 2 years, Netflix USA/Holland has only offered about 180 movies from this list, what a joke! The problem with Tubi is that they don't offer movies in Full HD (1080i) quality, which is a joke too. I would gladly pay them for HD and ad-free movies, but apparantly they are doing quite well with the advertising revenue. Favorite Movies 1968-2022 (first page) Favorite Movies 1968-2022 (last page)
Changes come into affect on June 1st. https://www.ghacks.net/2024/04/30/netflix-starts-pushing-basic-users-to-other-plans-forcefully/
I'll be letting mine expire. If I want ads I'll watch Tubi. And content has been seriously lagging for years. I tried watching Rebel Moon part 2 and gave up because it's sooo boring (though I enjoyed part 1 so was looking forward to it). Usually I end up watching something I've already seen, so I can live without it for now and fall back on DVDs. I didn't quit with their previous push to the ad-tier because once you left you couldn't get the Basic plan again; now they're just forcing me to kick the habit.
