Here's a rather detailed, thorough first review of the Plasma 6 desktop environment, covering testing in a virtual machine and on a laptop with AMD processor and integrated graphics, including look & feel, new UI and theme elements, Wayland and X11 sessions, HD display scaling, new system settings, screenshots without shadows, performance, responsiveness, various usability problems and visual artifacts, problems with system monitor and search, many issues with physical hardware compatibility, broken installer, other observations, and more. Should be interesting. Take a look. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/plasma-6-review.html Cheers, Mrk
in my VM i have reinstalled ubuntu for regular desktop, plasma is so damn slow. any MINT or ZORIN is muich faster, where ZORIN is similar to plasma. sorry, denied, never wont use again
Thanks for the testing. As always a great review. I tried a live CD (on USB) of Slackware64-current with Plasma 6, just a quick look. Booted to hardware and to a virtual machine. I've had issues with Wayland on Plasma 5 and shy away from it right now. I plan to wait until Plasma 6 falls in to Slackware64-current or Eric Hameleers starts up his Ktown project again.
Mrk, your report on the problems is exactly why the distros are holding off til the fall, to make sure all the bugs get worked out and such. By the time its ready for general availability with the new Windows 24H2 and the latest MacOS shipping, you'll be a happy camper!
Plasma 6 second review - Not bad, but more work is needed This is my second detailed review of the newly released Plasma 6 desktop environment, installed and tested on a laptop with AMD processor and integrated graphics, including installation-related problems, look and feel, colors and fonts, display scaling, numerous issues with system updates, various bugs and quirks, customization, performance, responsiveness, Wayland and X11 sessions, other observations, and more. Take a look. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/plasma-6-review-second.html Cheers, Mrk
The solution to broken packages is if they can't be fixed, is to completely remove them, reload Synaptic and install them again. Which usually fixes the problem of held packages. Packages held back after an upgrade can be upgraded with apt install, which will take care of all dependencies. Human intervention can complete a botched upgrade.
Of course, but that's not the point. The idea is for the system to be robust and work seamlessly. Mrk
Nice review. Really looking forward for Plasma 6. Still too gun shy to give Wayland a try based on my last attempt. When Plasma 6 is introduce to Slackware I will give it a shot. Kate is my go to text editor. I use it for creating and editing my bash SlackBuild scripts. The only thing I miss from an older version of Kate was the ability to insert a file. That went the way of the Dodo Bird many versions ago, perhaps with Plasma 5. I certainly don't want clutter or and IDE Kate. I use the Kate Sessions Manager for starting up stored Sessions. Also convenient for opening Kate without a session. The "annoying startup overview - where you choose your session" This sounds like the behavior with Kate in Plasma 5; Session, "Manually choose a session". I don't have to deal with Discover, not part of Slackware and probably won't be, for good reason. I do all of my upgrades using the tools provided with Slackware. Only reboot when really needed. Most upgrade don't need a reboot.
Plasma 6 third review - laptop with Nvidia graphics Third time's the charm. Or is it? Behold, my third detailed review of the Plasma 6 desktop environment, installed and tested on a laptop with Intel processor and hybrid graphics (integrated plus Nvidia), including botched installation with encryption, successful installation without encryption, problems with Nouveau, proprietary drivers, Wayland and X11 sessions, performance, responsiveness, stability, general behavior, everyday usage, various bugs and issues, other observations, and more. Have fun. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/plasma-6-review-third.html Cheers, Mrk
