Kaspersky Lab launched the new Lab ICS-CERT

Kaspersky has presented the Kaspersky Lab ICS-CERT, an infrastructure that aims to share the knowledge of cyber threats and in securing industrial systems. The Kaspersky Lab ICS-CERT will coordinate the exchange of information between stakeholders, making more efficient the adoption of countermeasures and the rapid response in case of security incidents.

Threat Landscape for Industrial Automation Systems, H2 2016

The Kaspersky Lab Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT) is starting a series of regular publications about our research devoted to the threat landscape for industrial organizations.

All statistical data used in the report was obtained using Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), a distributed antivirus network. Data was received from those KSN users who consented to have their data collected anonymously.

The research carried out in the second half of 2016 by Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT experts clearly demonstrates a number of trends in the evolution of industrial enterprise security.

Half of ICS Firms Suffered Security Incident Last Year

Half of global companies that run industrial control systems (ICS) suffered between one and five security incidents in the past year despite the vast majority (83%) claiming to be well prepared to face down attacks, according to Kaspersky Lab.

The AV vendor polled over 350 industrial organizations around the world and found ineffective cybersecurity costs them up to $497,000 (£383,000) per year.

Threat Landscape for Industrial Automation Systems in H1 2017

Kaspersky Lab Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT) publishes the results of its research on the threat landscape for industrial automation systems for the first six months of 2017.

All statistical data used in this report was collected using the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), a distributed antivirus network. The data was received from those KSN users who gave their consent to have data anonymously transferred from their computers.

The data was received from computers protected by Kaspersky Lab products that Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT categorizes as part of the industrial infrastructure at organizations. This group includes Windows computers that perform one or several of the following functions:

supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) servers,
data storage servers (Historian),
data gateways (OPC),
stationary workstations of engineers and operators,
mobile workstations of engineers and operators,
Human Machine Interface (HMI).
This group also includes computers of employees at contractor organizations and computers of industrial control network administrators and software developers who develop software for industrial automation systems.

OPC UA security analysis

This paper discusses our project that involved searching for vulnerabilities in implementations of the OPC UA protocol. In publishing this material, we hope to draw the attention of vendors that develop software for industrial automation systems and the industrial internet of things to problems associated with using such widely available technologies, which turned out to be quite common. We hope that this article will help software vendors achieve a higher level of protection from modern cyberattacks. We also discuss some of our techniques and findings that may help software vendors control the quality of their products and could prove useful for other software security researchers.

The main objective of these publications is to provide information support to global and local incident response teams, enterprise information security staff and researchers in the area of industrial facility security.
Main figures
The percentage of ICS computers attacked in H1 2018 increased by 3.5 p.p. compared with H2 2017 and reached 41.2%. The year-over-year increase was 4.6 p.p.

A particular emphasis was placed on open-source products used in various vendors’ solutions. Analyzing car software for vulnerabilities became a new area of research for Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT.

Energy sector under attack from malware combo attacks

Cyber-incidents that impact industrial control systems (ICS) can be amongst the most worrying that security professionals have to tackle. Not just from the production downtime, and consequential financial losses, that often result either; if that incident happens in a sector such as energy then the implications have a much broader and critical reach.

Which is why the latest Kaspersky ICS CERT report makes for very difficult reading.
Kaspersky products were triggered on 41.6 percent of ICS computers in the energy sector globally in just the first six months of 2019.

"This report has identified that security experts should be particularly cautious about malicious software that aims to steal data, spy on critically important objects, penetrate the perimeter and destroy the data," Kirill Kruglov, a security researcher at Kaspersky, said, "all of these types of incident could cause lots of trouble for industry."

Overall downward trend for percentages of attacked computers globally
Beginning in H2 2019 we have observed a tendency for decreases in the percentages of attacked computers, both in the ICS and in the corporate and personal environments.

In H1 2020 the percentage of ICS computers on which malicious objects were blocked has decreased by 6.6 percentage points to 32.6%.

The number was highest in Algeria (58.1%), and lowest in Switzerland (12.7%).

Despite the overall tendency for the percentages of attacked computers to decrease, we did see the number grow in the Oil & Gas sector by 1.6 p.p. to 37.8% and by 1.9 p.p. to 39.9 % for computers used in building automation systems. These numbers are higher than the percentages around the world overall.
