I recently encountered Guru Mode on one of my VMs. Can anyone explain why that happened?

Assuming you mean Guru Meditation, here is a pretty good explanation.

What the heck is this Virtualbox Guru Meditation error about? - fixedByVonnie

In a nut shell it means VirtualBox hit a bug and is in debug mode. You can let the VM continue to run or close it.

With a VM that shows Guru Meditation as a state, running VboxManage as follows normally clears it.

    VBoxManage controlvm <uuid|vmname> poweroff

    On some systems it's vboxmanage.
