The updater for Foxit Reader got blocked by my policy anti-executable software. Foxit Reader will attempt to run it's update component after launching, and get blocked by my AE's. I then disable Bouncer, and AppGuard to allow the updater to run. The updater will not run after it has been blocked. I had to reboot my computer each time. I tried adding a few rules to allow the updater, and it still got block. I could probably allow the updater to run by making a few policy changes, but the thing needs to try to run again without me having to reboot my computer. It just makes it a pain to see what is being blocked. I allowed the blocked component to run by making policy change, but it would not attempt to update anymore without rebooting my computer. After I rebooted it attempted to update again, and something else got blocked. I had to reboot my computer each time before Foxit Reader would attempt to update again. I think maybe I figured out why, but I have not verified it yet. I think one, or more of Foxit's processes continued to run after shutting down Foxit. I will try terminating those processes the next time an update is available, or Foxit get's blocked from attempting to update. I saw two processes still running that belonged to foxit last night after shutting foxit down so maybe those are zombie processes caused by Foxit being blocked when it attempted to update. Regardless I may still switch to PDF exchange, or maybe even SumatraPDF.
Cutting Edgetech, Foxit has a place about updating, searches, scripts, toolbars, etc. I believe it's in Preferences. Anything internet is turned off in my Foxit. Allow it, it'll call home in China. Anyway, can't you just use the settings in Preferences or am I missing some important point in this discussion of your troubles where some of its components still want to run? Sumatra is really a winner. Tiny, no issues.
Still using Sumatra and very satisfied with it. In the past I used Foxit until it started to get bloated.
I have switched from Foxit Reader to PDF-Xchange PDF Viewer. I'm glad I did so far. It is much lighter, and faster than Foxit Reader. I have not had any annoying problem with updates getting blocked by AppGuard yet, but I don't think PDF- XChange PDF Viewer has attempted to update yet.
SumatraPDF loads really fast and yes it is a 64 bit. It is simple and just suitable for my occasional use of reading PDF-files. Works fine with AppGuard and also with EMET 5.2. The latter program used to bring Adobe Reader loading PDFs really slow. I actually did not like PDF-XChange Viewer. I saw that it has a payed program option to install. The one I downloaded had some problems on the installing phase, though it seemed to work ok. Too much stuff same as Adobe Reader, I did not like the company name. Removed it. SumatraPDF is an easy simple reader and works so fast.
LOL, I'm thinking about making the opposite switch. It looks like Foxit Reader is actually lighter on my machine, and scrolling is also more smooth, but it does use more CPU time.
I guess I'm an exception. If I read a .pdf file once a year, it's exceptional. I am still with Sumatra.
I will check out Sumatra, I keep reading good things, I hope it isn't too basic though. And I will probably not be using Foxit Reader, it keeps phoning home, I really don't know what's up with companies nowadays.
PDF-XChange Viewer was replaced by PDF-XChange Editor. Still free though, but packed with features, maybe too much, a simple PDF would do.
@TairikuOkami I did not know that. They must have abandoned it recently as I received an update just three weeks ago.
Not anymore. Opening a 1 page PDF takes about 100MB and time. It is not about RAM, but before it was considerably less. Looking for a new one.
I hate any shell based apps, they only cause problems. Just calc for example, it takes 5 secs to open. Ridiculous.
Opening a browser, just to open PDF, takes time, when I want to quickly check something, like 1 sec to open, 1 sec to look and close multiple docs. Productivity is very important to me.
Yeah, I get that. Edge opens in one second when I want to read a PDF on my machines but it's not for everyone.
