Yeah, no kidding. Never thought I'd be fighting off spyware from Microsoft. Found more telemetry stuff(Win 7) that I haven't figured out how to get rid of but I blocked the exe's from running with ERP

    Excellent Name.

Checked the Toshiba laptop this morning and had the same and more MS updates like I reported on the HP computer earlier. I did the same as what I did earlier, Hid them all like I did on the HP computer. I've got to a point where I don't even look at the KB numbers anymore, just hid them. I even hid the KB's on updates on mouse and keyboard updates on the Toshiba. Who knows what MS is hiding in those updates. I believe that's the end of updates for me until the end of the year. Do I trust MS anymore? NO
Never thought I'd be fighting off spyware from Microsoft. Very True Peter, a lot of us feel the same.
I know what I'll be getting this Christmas - A new OS and it will not be Microsoft! :)

Due to the lack of information on certain updates it has made it difficult to decide as to whether they should be installed or not. I have chosen not to install any optional updates unless someone with more insight or knowledge has kindly shared that info online. I left KB3083710 to gather cobwebs, until today. It's an upgrade for Windows Update Client that enables you to block Windows 10 upgrade updates via group policy - though not for Home Premium as it doesn't have Group Policy Editor. Good for Pro and higher. I installed it for that reason.

Aside form that I have been having problems with notification icons settings being constantly ignored whenever I restart Windows - I have had to run a script to reset them for months on end - it has been a constant pain. After the KB3083710 update restart all my notification icons reset to my preferences. I am pleased - so a surprise benefit.

    Hi emmjay,
Thanks for the info about this update.
While I don't doubt what you say about KB3083710, I am still going to give it a wide berth for now. All the references I've seen about it (bar one - bleeping computer) are still unsure what it is, and suggest hiding it.
BUT why would Microsoft offer a KB update to block Windows 10 ?, it sounds counter intuitive to everything we have been hearing about MS and odd to say the least.

    Because of this:
How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options.
There have been several sets of KBs providing that option to use Group Policy (or a manual registry modification) to block upgrade to Windows 10.
June 2015 there were KB3050265 for Windows 7 and KB3050267 for Windows 8.1,
July 2015 there were KB3065987 for Windows 7 and KB3065988 for Windows 8.1,
and I guess there were sets for August and September as well.

Finally pulled the pin and installed KB2999226, KB3080079, plus KB3083710. No added processes in Task Manager, and using the Compare function in Autoruns, this is the result:

It's Win 10, you don't have a choice anymore. Microsoft will dictate the updates they want on Your Computer. :thumbd:
Lets see what happens on the first Kolossal Borked Update that puts all Win 10 computers inoperative. You know that will happen sooner or later.

Unless I'm mistaken, I do think there is a way you can uninstall an update in Win 10, and then prevent it from re-installing in case something like you mentioned above happens.. I'd have to Google it and check how it's done though, but I think they did that to prevent this from happening.

That would be something to see. I'd love to see how MS explains their new policy then!

I feel sorry for the novice computer user using Windows 10. They aren't going to know what to do when MS starts downloading drivers and updates that mess up their software on their computer. A novice user just reading this thread would be lost on uninstall / block updates / temporary prevent a Windows or driver update.......

Yeah, would be a catastrophe if Windows 10 was any less stable.

USA still the best. But barely.
I know this is wrong but I'm looking forward to M$ borking millions of W10 PCs.

Yep, I also believe it's just a matter of time. MS went about Win 10 the wrong way forcing people to be beta testers. I shut down my MS Updates on both of my Win 7 computers. I'll watch the forum for the good and bad updates, then wait for a week or more to download the non Win 10 updates.

I couldn't help giggling. Amazes me how people who say I'd never touch beta software, rushed into Win 10 not realizing it sure is beta. Oh well. People still need to learn there is no such thing as a "free" lunch.
