What is the easiest way or best free software to block ALL of the internet other than a handful of whitelisted websites? Allowing websites needs to be very simple.

Easiest way is to put a FAKE Proxy server into Internet Explorer and Firefox then list a handfull of as exceptions.

Whitelist, yes, but the recording function of easy-whitelist will allow all the urls your chosen site connects to regardless of whether you want them or not. This includes third party, malicious, intrusive or what have you. I wouldn't use it. Indeed, check the reviews.

i've read the whitelisting extensions are all easily bypassed - what about the fake proxy method?

Curious to hear your testings, have you blocked the web yet
Personally in the distant past I have used Peerblock with exclusion lists for sites required.

Yea, I can't connect to anything unless it's in exclusions.
