From my understanding, the ISO's contain both Home and Pro within the same image and will use the correct version depending on the system being upgraded or the key used for installation in the case of clean install.

I didn't have to use any key when I did my clean install today. I just opted to "skip" each time it came up (twice I think), and then when the install was done, it activated based on the hardware hash stored on the activation servers from my upgrade a few days prior. Never had to use a key at all either time....

I never used/installed those particular updates, I opted out (eg I selected hide) at the time so there was never an icon for it on my system. I just used the media tool to download and create an ISO to upgrade with (once I set the machine back to factory state) for the free upgrade. So, no, it never got installed ~ never ran, and the update process worked perfectly here.

I then restored my actual 7 OS from a '3rd party' image and I'm still working on a sysprep'd image using that same ISO and removing stuff I don't want through NTLite (along with waiting for software/drivers to catch up) before I *actually* move over with a clean install.

I just realised that one case where I was asked for a product key when doing an upgrade from Windows 7 was when I use using a Windows 10 Pro ISO to upgrade from a standard version of Windows 7 which would have not been eligable for the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

Thanks for that. I just rang the lass I was helping last night to inquire whether she has a Pro Win8.1 version. She doesn't. I was using a Pro ISO so that's why a Product Key was requested.

brian why not make yourself an iso with all versions thats what i do. i use usb drives and it contains home, pro, education, ent, ltsb. and yes if you were trying to upgrade that system with pro thats why it asked for a lic key

Upgraded Windows 8 Pro (running as a VM in Virtualbox) using the Media Creation Tool. Apart from the 'something happened' sillyness, the upgrade went just fine. Around 3GBs total downloaded. All 3rd party programs working OK. The Start Menu is an improvement on Windows 8 – but not by much IMO! I'm glad I retained Classic Shell Start Menu.

My major gripe is that despite enabling netplwiz to bypass the password entry – the login screen still appears, although a password is not required. After a 20 second delay – I get to the main UI. (how weird is that?) Minor niggles abound – by that's the fun of installing shiny new things!

Suddenly, Netflix is working for me now in Edge browser. It wasn't yesterday. Someone at Netflix must've flipped a switch or something... :)

I think I'll stick with 7 on my desktop right now. I've been playing around with it on my laptop some. The comments in the link provided dated 4 August 2015 do a good job of summarizing my thoughts about Windows 10.

I had reserved a copy of Windows 10 Pro, this morning I got the go ahead to download windows 10 Pro, It went fast(2 hours) . After it finished I lost my internet connection and it wasn't activated. I shut it down and went out when I got Back and was going to look for the reason, low and behold my internet connection was back. I got a popup a new version of "One Drive" was being installed. I checked on activation settings/update and security/activation-clicked the button to activate then it said windows is activated

    I have Windows 8.1-64 installed.
I reserved my copy of W10 a month or so ago.
It never downloaded. I still get the message they will alert me when it is ready.
I downloaded the 64 bit manual download file. It downloads but when I run it, nothing happens. I have "install Windows update" on auto pilot.
Any ideas why I am not getting the upgrade?

What do you mean nothing happens when you run it? Download and burn the ISO to a DVD or flashdrive. Then run the setup.exe from the Windows 8 desktop to upgrade to 10.

When I run the EXE, nothing happens. No screen change, no message of any kind. No downloading complete, nothing.

That makes sense. Since I heard others were able to perform the manual install process, I thought I could also do it. Not sure how they could do it and I can't.
I am not in a hurry. I am fine waiting in line. I just don't want to wait forever only to find I truly did have a problem.
    Thanks for your response.

There is a link in the article that can help somewhat for those needing help with settings.
