I guess I get the UAC prompt because I'm in a standard user account and have UAC at the maximum level. The C/A/D thing is added via Group Policy based on recommendations here.

However, your post gave me the idea to try changing the setting in the admin account (where I wouldn't get the prompt), and it worked.

My main gripe with windows 10 was explorer windows not opening in the centre of the screen like in previous versions of windows, open explorer & centre it on the screen & then close it. Open it again & it has moved down & to the right almost as if it is set to cascade windows. A silly gripe I know but it really sets off my visual OCD lol. Ended up rolling back to 8.1 till they fix it. Also the fact that Private Firewall doesn't work in 10, emailed their support & was told that it might never support it unless they can find a business case for doing so :(

Don't worry - I tried all sorts of methods.

First used the media creation and after 12 hours it never went past 0% although something was d/l to a $Window folder - about 2718 Mb but no files I recognised.

Then did a Win update and used the force method which failed at 99%. That was a $Windows.~ folder but could not run setup from it even moving to another location.

Then went back to the media creation and it d/l the iso in few hours. That successfully installed on another partition giving me a dual boot with Win 8.1 on my Lenovo R500. Haven't got around to activating it yet. I think if I had updated my Win 8.1 first I would have got the iso first time.

Had repeated Windows Update failures downloading Win10 to my Win8.1 system after reserving and having notice in Windows Updates that W10 was ready to download. Downloading would just hang at 0% for long time (15-30 minutes?) and then go red and give me a failure message. Error codes on this seemed to vary. Last error code I received was numbered 80246008.

Also I noticed the BITS service was not running and (although it was on Auto (Delayed) as it should be) I couldn't get it to start.

I'd already been through all the troubleshooting steps I could find and couldn't resolve the issue and was ready to throw in the towel and pursue ISO download options.

HOWEVER, Googling 80246008, I stumbled across a registry change that actually fixed me up even though it was written for Win7 systems. See: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...d/d35f6286-ae71-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?auth=1
    - see the response from Azeez N.

In that section of the registry, the key did not exist and I created it. I also noted that it DID have a key for files not to back up for Macrium - I assume my Macrium Reflect install placed it there last week before all this started AND assume the Macrium install did NOT somehow remove the desired key as part of the install.

Nonsensical as it seemed, as soon as I placed the missing key in the registry and rebooted (first checking and noting that now I COULD start BITS service), I was again offered the W10 download and bada-bing, about 90 minutes later, I had W10 upgrade dowloaded, installed and running on my laptop.

Thought this might offer something to somebody in similar situation and not afraid to edit registry.

NOTE: I had imaged entire disk with 2 different backup means before I did any of this. I suggest you have your own belts and suspenders before trying (if you are so inclined).

EDIT - cleaned up typos and revised link and reference to correct one I actually used, otherwise it would have pointed to a different registry key.

I've had Google toolbar disappear in IE11 on two machines. Anyone else see this?

I seem to be having problems getting Windows to wake from sleep. A few times, it simply gave me a blank screen when my PC powered on, and it just restarted by itself. Today and the other day, it woke to a BSOD, saying "tried to write to random memory" or something like that.

Upgraded to Win 10 Pro from 8.1 Pro without an issue. However later I have noticed that I'm losing LAN connection after every reboot, I cannot get IP address. I have to unplug a cord, wait a while and again plug in. Only then I get IPs and can connect on net. This issue relates only LAN connection, wi-fi and mobile connections reconnect after reboot successfully. I have latest LAN driver. Anyone can help me?

I have Win 10 installed ok but cannot activate it. It will not accept my Win 8 number. It could be because I did a fresh install on another partition and left Win 8 installed. I don't really want to commit to W10 at the moment. I thought others here still had their earlier versions still installed.

    Any thoughts please.

I had this happen with my wifi once on a reboot, it failed to connect. Also, it used to fail to reconnect after returning from sleep. The solution to that, was to go into Device Manager, right click on the wifi device under Network devices, then select properties, and then click the power management tab, and untick the box about allowing the device to be shut off to save power. This fixed the return from sleep issue, and I haven't seen it fail to connect at boot time again either...

    djg05,

You need to start again and do it conventionally. You must upgrade Win8.1 to Win10 in the same partition.

I suspect a Microsoft dual boot created later will cause activation issues.

Thanks a lot for the hint but unfortunately it doesn't work in my case. :-(

It's very annoying when I have to unplug, wait and plug again to get online after every reboot.

Somebody has any other advices, please?

Thanks Brian - thought that might be the case so did an upgrade install which went smoothly enough but is not activated yet. Pressing the activate button it says "Can't activate, try again later". Will leave it running and see what happens.

When fast boot up is enabled and I power off laptop the next start of laptop fails and I have to push power button again to start it. Having fast boot up disabled, laptop starts normally.

Well the reason I cannot activate it is because I cannot get the wifi to connect. It can see the router but won't connect. I have re-enabled all the privacy settings in case one of them might be interfering. I have uninstalled Avast and other security but makes no difference. This was an upgrade install and all was working before and was able to upgrade itself after the install.

It is strange because the clean install I did on another partition connects without problem.

Just thought it might have been the latest upgrade so have uninstalled that but that does not work either.

    Any thoughts please

“Upgrade was going very, very well, and after the installer got to around 89%, the computer rebooted, during the reboot, the BIOS screen appears with a black screen and ‘Missing Operating System.’ This was doing an in-place upgrade...” one of the users who received the error says.

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/wind...h-missing-operating-system-error-488719.shtml

"Most of the users hit by the error claim they were using ASUS laptops with SSDs, so maybe Windows 10 has some sort of compatibility issue that prevents files from being correctly deployed on a computer with this configuration."

Yesterdays update didn't work, blue screen popped up saying computer was going to reboot, never did, so I powered off, nothing, tried again, nothing, so I went to the repair screen tried to repair, nothing, went back to W7. Back to old comfortable and reliable, got W7 finely tuned so that it works perfectly on my desktop, well except for Windows Restore, hasn't worked for about 3 months and didn't work on W10, bonus was going back to W7 it works now.

Just to update this in case it helps anyone.

I restored my Win 8.1 image over the Win 10 partition. Before going any further I removed all the security apps, then upraded to Win 10 via an iso.

When it was finished I tried to customise the settings but each time I selected the icon the m/c froze solid (Lenovo R500). Tried it several times but always the same, so I chose quick settings instead (neat idea by MS). On completion all was fine and internet connection working, it had also activated autmatically. Then went and set the privacy settings.

Installed the latest update and all working fine after that.

Have installed Classic Shell which removes all the gimmickry. Not sure I will keep W10.

    Update to W10 FIXED.
I have tried everything to get W10 installed over W8.1-64.
When downloading I got several error messages including error 8007005.
I tried to download the manual update but when I clicked on it, nothing happened.
    I finally found a solution.
I downloaded, installed, and ran Tweaking.com - Windows Repair from here http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
I checked everything that could be checked and let the program do it's magic.
Upon completion, Windows 10 installed flawlessly.

    - definitely heavier on battery than 8.1. My laptop lasted to run min. 6 hours with 8.1, with 10 it runs 4 hours. And I have disabled all calls home etc. during the upgrade.

i have a client with 2 older laptops with hd4250 graphics and no matter what i have tried (basically everything) it will get to about 34% and black screen and thats all. sucks ati has not updated these drivers. the laptops are plenty fast for what they need and they have no use for anything newer so far these are the only 2 i have not been able to upgrade. have done over 100 others now

@zfactor Do the laptops have switchable graphics, or only the ATI video?
