Windows 10 Announced - Released 29-Jul-2015

Discussion in 'other software & services' started by ronjor, Sep 30, 2014.

  1. I upgraded from iso image (my wife's laptop is always earlier with updates, she does not want to upgrade until December, because she does not trust first releases, so I tried first).

    1. See 1 previous post for download and burn ISO on DVD
    2. Start windows (7 in my case), open file explorer, open DVD, launch setup to upgrade

that is all, update okay, files and personal settings okay.

  2. G3240 Pentium with first gen SSD in 35 seconds, at least 20 seconds were due to BIOS start (not using EUFI and not having WIndows 8 secure/fast boot devices seems to cause the delay, first it looks for EUFI, then uses legacy BIOS). Changing boot preferences and using fast boot option of motherboard (not Windows 8 ) and disabling Intel Rapid Technology, shrinked total boot time (pushing power button until desktop) to 22 seconds total

    Regards Kees

It did d/l a load of files, about 2718.

At that point I had not updated Win 8.1 and that might have had something to do with it.

Must have had some foresight on your reply because I restarted the d/l iso process and seems to be working - got up to about 45% so should complete today. Slow connection here.

    Thanks for your help.

Just did a clean install off a dvd/iso created by media creation tool, everything went fine, no problems at all. Activated automatically since I did the upgrade first a few days ago. Nice to have a clean fresh system again.

Win 7 upgrade, full, or OEM? Is this your desktop? Do have a retail PC or custom built?

Have now successfully d/l the iso and have it dual booting with Win 8.1 on my Lenovo R500. Have not yet connected to the net. Will probably try the dummy number later in the week.

I went through the customisation route and cancelled just about all the defaults. Was surprised just how leaky it was in default state.

It was a Win 7 (retail) upgrade which went fine on the 30th, activated etc. Then did the clean install today, went fine, and activated. You have to do the upgrade first, then you can do a clean install after that if you want. I chose to do that today.

Anyone get Netflix working in Edge browser yet? I can an "unexpected error" and can't find anything about it after Googling. I was under the impression that it should work and that I could get 1080p in Edge... Any ideas?

Thanks. I'm just trying to get more specifics about what hardware the Win 10 upgrade is tied to and what OS it was upgraded from. I built my own desktop and use Win 7 pro upgrade on it. If it was tied to just the motherboard, then I'm probably willing to do the upgrade if I can. I may not even be eligible for a free upgrade of 10 because 7 is not OEM or retail. I change out a HD, GPU, and probably the sound card at least once through the life of the motherboard. I don't want to consume my 7 license and then have 10 deactivate on me later, assuming I can even get it free.

Yeah, I guess that can get a little complicated. I'm not sure what they look at hardware-wise. I know they create some sort of hash based on the hardware that's stored on their activation servers. But I'm unclear on the details.

I have the same problem. But is still OK in IE11.
I was also having a problem with FireFox, but it seemed to have fixed itself. It happened while I was in a Live Chat with Netflix support. I went to Netflix to get the error codes and bingo-Netflix was working.

So try their online support chat.

I thought edge dropped Silverlight. Do they now use httml 5 or something?
You can use the Netflix App if all else fails.

Ok, thanks, I might try talking to them. I'm using Firefox with silverlight for now. I understood that Edge was supposed to do Netflix, and I assumed it used HTML5. I guess I'm good for now with Firefox. It's odd though, when I was testing the insider preview builds, Netflix DID work in Edge, but it was pretty choppy and hardly viewable... Thanks for the suggestions.. :)

OK I downloaded the Windows 10 .lSO, I want to burn it to a USB Flashdrive to create the bootable UFD as @Brian K suggested using the Rufus 2.2 Portable...https://rufus.akeo.ie/ . How does the

windows 10.lSO know I have Windows 8.1 Pro and NOT Windows 8.1 STANDARD

why not just use the windows 10 download tool. it will put the iso directly on the usb drive and make it bootable for you.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

start it up select Create installation media for another PC below the upgrade option, select usb and what iso you want to put on it and x86 or x64 or both and let it run
