For sure, it can be very subjective. To me at the root of it is really how responsive everything is. Or, more generically, how fast crap opens/closes/starts when you click on things. For me it's pretty much instantaneously, with apps, windows and web pages. I have a Core 2 Duo @ 2.83 GB, which is dated by today's standards, but 99% of it is free'd up at pretty much all times. The highest I've seen my RAM usage get is a tad over 700 MB, and that's after leaving my computer on for over a week and running pretty much every app I have.

The process of trimming down the OS began as the result of having inferior specs and needing to get the most out of it... with a Dell Dimension 3000 with a single core Celeron CPU and 512 MB of RAM. It was never about security then, as I just used the integrated XP inbound FW and Avira Free AV, and knew little more than that about security. But I didn't have enough money to upgrade or buy a new box, so as they say "necessity is the mother of invention", or something like that. I learned how to get thrifty. Then when I started taking security more seriously I learned even more things/ways to trim things back, and realized I was killing 2 birds with 1 stone by doing it.

And I guess if you really go back to the genesis of it all it was about saving HD space, back on my EMachines with a 500 Mhz CPU, 32 GB of RAM, and a 4.3 GB HD. Deleting everything I didn't need to fit more music and pics on that meager HD. I was pushing 98SE then. Really solid OS that served me well until XP SP2 came out.

Very nice, I am a fan of minimal/clean looking desktops.

To me, it always give off that calm feeling, when it looks that clean

Desktops that have icons everywhere and has a bajillion pieces of software installed, drives me bonkers.

Yeah, the new Windows 10 start menu allows me to do it that way.

I set the icons up to show as small tiles, instead of the default medium tile size.
