It does work now, but I am not sure why (I think the disk/partition numbers might have been incorrect?).

From the blog. The "Get Windows 10" app doesn’t appear in Windows 7 or 8.1

Wonder if this could be one of the reasons some have had issues attempting a clean install of Windows 10 - tenforums give this warning, most likely connected to machines that have had Windows 8 on it:

My friend has an old motherboard which has nforce 630a integrated gfx . The win10 icon shows that the pc is incompatible for the upgrade . Can i try upgrading from a usb ?

According to here, Windows 10 was installed on more than 14 million devices in the first 24 hours.

Not sure I can believe the following statistic, but Neowin states the install rate was 16 per second.

Amazing! I'm surprised for the most part, it went so well.

"Based on lots of anecdotal evidence, if you decide to take matters into your own hands, the best approach is to first use Microsoft's tool (described in my blog post) to "Upgrade this PC now." If you don't trust Microsoft (imagine that) and want to perform a clean install, first Upgrade this PC now, then either run a Windows 10 reset (Start, Settings, Update & Security, Recovery, Reset this PC, Get started) or create a boot drive using the provided tool, boot from the drive, and upgrade away"....http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...upgrades-roll-out-heres-how-to-get-yours.html

W10 Upgrade Failed. C1900208 . I opened the links in the view error details and they take me to how to sign up for the W10 Insiders program - very helpful!

The download showed 100% complete and I have the files, but I assume they are corrupted. I see that others have received this error code (I googled it). MS answers say WAIT it is not complete! Others just say they have tried it over and over again and got the same error - 5 tries for one and it eventually succeeded.

For me it started off a bit sluggish, but after half a dozen reboots this past day, it's speeding up and booting quicker and so on. Seems like 7 and 8.1 were faster though, but I won't make any conclusions for sure till I've used it for a week or so.

I'm downloading again with the media creator. What's the definition of insanity? This time, I've removed my antivirus and will disconnect printer and wireless mouse from usb and see what happens. The check said everything was good. Laptop is only 10 months old. If it doesn't work, I'll stay with 7 Pro or maybe take a look at 8.1 - the disc was included in the purchase as a free upgrade.

On Home, NO. On Pro all you can do is delay the restart.

Isn't it possible even to disable a service to prevent auto-updating?

On Home, I have an option that reads "Notify to schedule restart" (which I have selected). Is that the same option available in Pro?

I just got an email from MS about my reserved copy of 10. It says it could be ready in a few days or a few weeks... Haha.. I'm sure glad I used the media creation tool and got it instantly instead of waiting around for weeks. I'd recommend that to everyone. However, I don't know if partially downloaded setup files from reserving it would have any impact on the media creation tool install method. But if you haven't started yet, the tool is definitely the way to go.

I know yours is just a single experience so far but by all means chime in again with any further comparisons if you will because I am really on the fence over this given I finally have Windows 8 running at optimum along with a ton of customizations as always

I upgraded a Dell laptop from Windows 8.1 using Windows Update, didn´t have to wait. I reserved on July 29 and the next day appeared the size of the download (2700 MB) and a "More information" button. I clicked on the button and the download began. The entire process to download and upgrade took about 2.5 hours, no problems at all. All settings and apps worked well afterwards. Windows 10 is good and fast.

Well, I labored over it for quite a while too. But I have images of both 7 and 8.1, and I figured I'd just go ahead and upgrade my 7. If it didn't work out, I could always restore my 7 image or roll back the upgrade etc. But no doubt, if you've got things set up the way you like it, then it's hard to justify taking that step sometimes. I think if you've got images, you can't go wrong. My upgrade was slow (took about 2 hours total) due to my aging machine here (6 year old Asus core 2 duo 2.2ghz etc), but overall, the upgrade went fine with no issues at all using the media creation tool and upgrade this pc now option. Then again, I've heard a lot of stories from people who had troubles with it too. Bottom line, I guess there are no guarantees. It's best if you can go into the upgrade with a nothing to lose attitude and have images to fall back on...

Yes, I was very impressed that I had all my apps and data including MS Office and many others, and everything just worked great. No complaints there at all...
