Thanks @roger_m and @zarzenz for sharing of your (bad) experience with dual graphics as my laptop has got Intel and AMD graphics. As I see I will hold off Win 10 upgrade for a while.

Yes, I have. It's been a very good experience so far. I was pleased to see that Acer had released drivers for Windows 10 for many models. (http://www.acer.ca/ac/en/CA/content/windows10-eligible-models)

The interesting thing is that Acer doesn't often update drivers for models that are a year or so old, so it was nice to get a whole bunch of new drivers now.

thank you so very much, buddy.
one more, if you don't mind. where/how do i find the product key? they say apps like magical jelly bean don't work w/ 10. they also say even if you manage to find it, it is a generic key and you can't use it to activate your copy of clean installed 10. so?

Great. Thanks. My model is among the others being supported by Acer. Though I'm still uncertain about upgrade because of dual graphics troubles which plagued other folks.

After a few hiccups I've got Windows 10 running on a ThinkPad T400. I was able to get the laptop to boot into safemode with networking, and then installed Drive The Life to repair the video driver. The laptop still wouldn't boot normally, but I changed the video setting in the BIOS to use the onboard video, and turned off PS detection of switchable graphics and after Windows booted.

There were no audio latency issues, which I had experienced with preview builds of Windows 10, on a diffent model of T400 (with only onboard Intel video, but the same sound chip).

Hey, you're right - the product key I wrote down was complete nonsense!

It appears that we can clean reinstall and the 'machine ID' (generated the first time we do the upgrade) is sent to Microsoft - allowing Windows 10 to activate online automatically.

What part of the article says that specifically?

Comments by Raven2099 and others accumulate. Googling the error there are other reports out there that the described workaround didn't solve it, at least not for all users.

I hope MS will give us a reliable solution via Windows Update.

I got a family members W8 laptop upgraded and that went great. Another laptop we have is older than 6 years and has W7/Pro on it. GWX10 said it was OK to go and the download started automatically yesterday. It was about 5GB. Then MS sent 3 driver updates as optional updates for it. I did not download them yesterday but I noticed they were gone from the list this morning. Audio driver, screen and graphics driver. The MFs website stated that only one was out of date for W7, the other 2 were already W7/10 and up to date. Maybe that was why they disappeared from windows update.

I have a question about the W7 5GB download if someone can answer it. I have a year to decide when to install the upgrade, so will MS continue to make changes thru windows update to these downloaded files, keeping them up to date? Or say will it be an SP1 later to take care of any changes? I am new to this so I have no experience with how it all works. Sorry if my question is stupid.

Any way to resize the Task Bar Search box? It takes up a lot of Task Bar real estate.
    Thanks.

I currently dual boot win 7 & 8.1 on this machine. Am I likely to retain dual booting if I upgraded the win 8.1 disk?

See, the problem is it may require you to have a ms account in order for your clean installed 10 to be activated. that's what i'm afraid of.

Spent the last hour downloading with the Media Creation Tool and began the upgrade. The upgrade for Win 10 began and everything installed. Did the first reboot, and then Checkdisk appeared. I wasn't sure whether to let it run or bypass, so I let it run. Then this "Failure on first boot. Error 0xc1900101-0x20017." It reverted me back to Win 7 Pro. I guess I'll wait for the Get Win 10 to give me Win 10 and see what happens. I just knew it couldn't be smooth sailing.

My laptop HP 355 G2, 8G RAM and 1 terrabyte HD.

I have to admit I've got really "cold feet right now" reading about all of the issues, especially the "getting stuck" thread! I purchased an ASUS 11.6" W8.1 notebook over the weekend from Best Buy for $149. My attitude was get somewhat use to 8.1 and then install 10. Indeed, I pretty much hated 8.1, although it became somewhat tolerant after the Classic Shell start menu install, but my attitude remained might as well get 10. Now, like I stated, I'm having second thoughts. I have made a full Macrium image and have a boot USB drive for it. Ah, decisions!

Simply right-click on a blank area on the Task Bar, highlight "Search", and then change the selection to "Hidden" (see screenshot). You can also change it to an icon, whatever suits you.

I restored my Win 7 image this afternoon and was ready to "reserve" my 10, but before I did that I had 2 updates in Win Updates so I installed those. After that, the little get Win 10 icon in the tray disappeared(!) and now I've got no way to reserve it. I guess that just leaves the Media Creation Tool and "update this pc now" option. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what's left at this point...

One thing about it, there is plenty of time to get the upgrade. As noted in the post above yours, they are working on the bugs.

Awesome! Thank you for the information. The icon is much better for me.

    Cheers!

Just a heads up for anyone with an Intel I217-V Ethernet card. Update your driver before installing W10. It took me the better part of a day to figure out the problem with no internet connection. And this was on a 2 week old ASUS desktop. Would have been quite annoying were it my only machine.
