have you made sure your av is disabled one of THE most common causes for this we had with win 8.1 upgrades was various av's blocking certain files from being updated. i had this issue many times with webroot and others

Didn't use an iso on this laptap. Used the link above. Did not use a key. When the upgrade finished, everything was activated and ready to go.

I tried it earlier today and it wouldn't activate. However, I am not upgrading from 7, but trying to use my permanent activation on my ms account used in the insider builds. It seems I'll have to wait till the dust settles and find out more info. From what I heard, I thought I could clean install and use the info from my ms account which has my hardware info stored, etc. Didn't work today though...

The GWX install would pre-check your computer for any problems. Not sure whether you absolutely need that though.

Thanks. It's the only "important' update not installed.

if you upgrade from the iso or the download tool you do not need it first.

no you MUST do an upgrade first THEN you can do a clean install. verified this with a super high up directly at ms. at least for now no way around that except to buy retail. it checks the key during install. whats crazy is ANYONE even pirates can upgrade to now have a legit win 10 for free. people are doing it all over the place using pirated copies.

have you tried without the anti virus? using webroot as an example i had to either disable or uninstall it EVERY time i went from win 8 to win 8.1 or it would fail like that. also if you have some hardware win 10 sees as not compatible it could also happen.

Ok, thanks. I suspected it might work if I tried an upgrade first, so I tried that using the download tool and "upgrade this pc", but the thing crashed about 64% of the way thru building the media, or whatever it was doing. I've seen others mentioning crashes too on different forums.

I think I'll wait a while, and if I have to, I might try upgrading my 7, but I was hoping I could just upgrade my 10 insider pro version, which is permanently activated for my ms account. Guess we'll see what gives in the next few days...

I would try it anyway. I did disable my antimalware program to eliminate any problems upgrading.

According to Norton I shouldn't need to disable it but I'm wondering if VoodooShield could be the culprit.

anything that will block any system files from being altered can affect it. also as ronjor said try the update i have done 2 now without it though just fine

Never used it and mine updated just fine. Sure any 'checked' issues being flagged ahead of time might be of help but I was lucky there I guess.

It doesn't even get that far. I click on Upgrade this computer and in a few seconds I get Something Happened. That's it.

If you had the icon, it pre-checked your system. Did you ever open it?

    Good news!

After uninstalling VoodooShield and running the ISO Win10 is now in the process of installing and checking for updates. I still couldn't upgrade from within the program but the ISO is working.

    Thanks all. :thumb:
