Another update just came thru in the past hour, I presume it's a fix for some of the recent update issues....

Recovery Drive > Check. Windows 7 Backup (system image) > Check.

Guess I'm ready for the next round of updates.

Regarding incompatible software and hardware it's a good idea to figure this out beforehand. By clicking on the GXW icon and selecting "Get Windows 10" a compatibility report can be viewed. Manufacturer's websites may also have information about printers and other hardware.

It only tells you that your hardware will work, but it will not tell you how good it will work. For example, my Dell laptop has an audio chip from Sigmatel/IDT. IDT does not release drivers to end consumers, and so the only official drivers for my system released by Dell are for Vista. Somebody made a modded driver from official drivers for Windows 7 and so it has excellent audio on Windows 7. However, even though there are reference or default drivers for Windows 8 and 8.1, and it passes the compatibility test for windows 8 and 8.1, these drivers do not sound as good as the optimized drivers for Windows 7 and Vista.

I just installed Windows 10 over the weekend on my system and the audio works fine with the default MS audio driver, but it does not sound good, and since I use my PC as an entertainment hub, I will be forced to stick to Windows 7 on this machine.

So, you can only learn so much from the compatibility report, the only way to really test the compatibility of your hardware is to install Windows 10 on it and see if everything works as it should.

This is why I said I was going to wait before I installed Windows 10, I have a Scanner; USB backup; Headset/Microphone. It would be nice if the devices worked properly or at all.

The easiest way to see if everything works would be to install one of the insider builds. Takes the guesswork out of things.. ;)

@mantra It will be. Even if there are no official download links there will be unofficial sources such as torrents.

Today my OEM sent out the list of their supported devices for W10 (and a list of limitations). Although my laptop gets the 'meets requirements' - with no warnings from the MS 'GW10 check your device', my laptop was not on the OEM list of supported W10 devices. The device has none of the items in the limitations list, so it must have been condemned by the OEM for another reason.

I refer to 'W10 is supported for the lifetime of the device' specification that appeared in the MS W10 EULA that may have something to do with it. The OEM has the right to determine the support lifespan of a device. Technically I could upgrade to W10 , but not legally, using the current OEM license. I reserved W10 on this device, so if MS sends me the upgrade I can not install it (legally).

Obviously I could put a retail license on this device and it would not be in violation of the W10 EULA.

I'm thinking your OEM isn't going to support Win10 on that device. You don't rely on OEM for support, do you? I'm assuming anyone astute enough to be on this forum provides his own support.

I don't follow why you wouldn't be legally able to upgrade.

I don't rely on OEM for support, I look to this forum and provide my own support. I may look to see if the OEM has a driver for this or that but I usually have to do a search for it on the web.

Don't give yourself a hard time. Microsoft ultimately determines your upgrade eligibility. If Windows Update offers you the free upgrade then it's yours for free.

Yeah not even bothering with 10 for a long while down the road. I don't want to be that tin foil hat guy, but I'll wait to see what "surprises" MS rolls out over the next year once everyone is locked in with their new OS

Might be worse, but you'll see "surprises" on every version of Windows. ;)

I'm not surprised by this. Microsoft introduced the Windows Store in "8" and we've known for some time that it's transitioning Windows to the mobile model. I'm used to this on my smart phone and I have no problem either ignoring ads in free apps or getting pro versions that are ad free when I feel they're worth it.
