My wife's windows 8.1 laptop was previously in "reserve windows 10" mode but she says she cannot afford not even a day of non use of her machine due to very important duties needing to be done. With nothing but confusing info on the net she does not want to take any chances of installing win 10 when win 8.1 is working great so far. So she asked me to cancel the win 10 download and I did so. She is still freaked out since the icon is still on the task-bar. Should she be apprehensive? I am a XP guy and have little knowledge of win 8.1, anyone else run across this situation?
No, the icon will stay there.. you're ok as long as you don't reserve it again. Just ignore the icon and make sure you don't click it and reserve again. Otherwise, nothing to worry about.
U also might uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 and make sure it doesn't install again. That will among other things get rid of the icon. As an aside if her machine is that critical(as mine are) I hope it is backed up.
Windows 10 is suppose to download in the background (so work can be done). Can the computer be left on at night and Windows 10 be downloaded automatically while sleeping? It is only while instillation that requires user interaction.

Peter2150: Good idea on removing KB3035583. The 8.1 laptop is backed up data wise but not imaged , must look into this. The net is otherwise very confusing and often contradictory.
No need to remove the KB, just disable the scheduled tasks that cause gwx to run at startup. Right click on "my computer" or its equivalent in Windows 8.1 and click "manage". Then Go to Computer Management > Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Setup > gwx Disable all the tasks that are there. There should be 2 or 4 tasks, then Reboot. gwx icon and background process will be gone. When you are ready to upgrade to Windows 10, enable the tasks and Reboot.
