I've been using Magic DVD Ripper and love it except it doesn't give a size estimate for the output file. This seems like something that would be standard on all DVD rippers but I'm discovering it's not. Tried WinX DVD Ripper and it doesn't either. DVDFab does but it's so painfully slow it's not a realistic candidate. Can you recommend one that's good and shows output size? Paid or Free. Win. XP, .NET Framework 2 SP2.
FYI when it comes to ripping, the slower the better. Far less chance of errors in the resulting rip though there will never be an 100% error free method of ripping optical disks.
I have used VidCoder to rip my home dvds to mp4 with good results. It uses Hadbrake as its engine but provides "target file size". Also try AnyDVD, it actually rips and even shrinks the dvds down, but leaves them in vob format. I do not remember whether it provides a target size or not.
