Bellgamin, the last beta of Sunbelt was released as freeware basically, no license purchase necessary, but they never actually got it to the point where it was a true release (non-beta). The only place I remember getting it was right off the Sunbelt Kerio beta forum board, there was a link there or something. It was good, and you could still have the old Kerio 2 rules interface if you wanted it also, kinda nice.. And it didn't have the flaws of old Kerio 2 either. I'll look around and see if I can find it anywhere, but I suspect that it was removed from the Sunbelt site and the freeware version is gone now...

PS: Here is the old Wilders thread on the subject, it was beta 4.7 I guess:

I started a conversation, kinda like a PM, with you to ask a couple questions. Need clarification for one on your e-mail address....

If complementing Set A is the purpose, why not using PrivateFirewall (i think you already have an extensive experience with it)? Anti-Logger, HIPS, DSA, free (as you already know).

BTW, have you ever tried Net-Peeker? Firewall, Speed/Traffic Shaping, very limited HIPS features (haven't tried registry-protection and anti-execution, to be frank), Traffic Capturing, Blocklist Importing (among others). No IPv6 support and localhost filtering (i think), but it's one of the most informative firewalls i've ever tried. Not very popular, but its author is quite capable and experienced. Finally, it hasn't been updated for 2 years, so better contact the dev for current Net-Peeker's licensing system, if you are interested.

@ bcsman - I replied. Getting 4.7.5 would be manna from Heaven. Shazam!

@ CGuard - I used PFW for a very long time but it began to give me a problem. Namely, it wouldn't remember certain changes I made. I'm fairly certain the problem was with me, but I was never able to chase it down & the PFW proponent ceased answering emails.

As to Net-Peeker -- I downloaded a 30-month trial copy & will give it a test using Shadow Defender IF & ONLY IF it doesn't require a reboot during install. However, I did some research around the net & the following comment is typical...

It doesn't require reboot, iirc. That comment stands true. Net Peeker hasn't been dev's first priority. He used to update it twice a year, but hasn't for the last couple (abandonware?). Hence the heads up "contact before (if) purchase".

I thought i should recommended it because it a) goes back to the XP prime years, b) there is definitely an "old-school-firewall" aura surrounding it, c) i consider it highly capable and informative (i value the latter attribute when it comes to 3rd-party firewalls).

    EDIT

@bellgamin, here is WS thread (mainly, first impressions)

    Also, a correction.
    I meant "loopback zone".

@ CGuard -- I gave the latest version of PFW a 3-hour trial. It still does not execute its custom HIPS settings. For example, I put notepad.exe in "Ask" status on all HIPS categories. Then I executed notepad. exe. PFW never said a word. Same was true for tests I ran with a browser exe & PDF reader exe. PFW never said a word. I disabled ALL my other security & re-tested. Same results. Mystery!

@ bcsman -- Manna hasn't arrived yet. It will NOT get killed by my spam sifter. All my spam sifter does is to redirect suspected spam into a special mailbox which I always check very carefully before killing anything.

@ All -- I am now using Sunbelt/Kerio FW. It is playing nicely with my other security. Not a chatterbox. I'm in love!

This reminds me of an issue i faced when i was regularly using PF. I cannot remember specifics, but i do remember it got sorted out by deleting the related Trusted Publisher. Assuming that's not the case here + AppGuard is present, even though disabled as you say, on your system, maybe excluding every PF's process, driver, exe from AG's protection (blind-trusting it as a "Power App" - sorry, i've got very limited experience with AG) would solve the problem?

    Anyway, judging by

i think you've already make up your mind. :thumb:

can this be installed on Windows 7 or 8.1?
if can't, able to to recommend a free and light firewall ? Don't really like Comodo fire as it installs geek buddy and seems a resource hog. And abit too noisy.

No, Sunbelt FW is not for win7 and up. Might be ok on Vista, I believe last version included Vista.
Take a look at Agnitum Outpost and Private Firewall. Both work on Win7 and are not resource hogs. I'm pretty sure Outpost works on 8.1. Don't know about Private.

I love Kerio 2.1.4 & 2.1.5... GREAT legacy FW's. LooknStop is an oldie but goodie too. I'm not sure if this qualifies yet but my favorite FW is Comodo FW/D+ v5.10. I love the D+. If I didn't want to use the HIPS I'd probably use Kerio instead.

They don't make em like they used to.

Are there any working links to the 4.7.5 version of Sunbelt Firewall please? I've tried google and the web archive, but all the links that i could find were offline.
I used the old free version for my virtual xp, i really liked it. I'm still using Comodo 5.12.

    Thanks for any help.

@KalteFusion I just spent 10 minues searching on Google, but only found older versions. It seems that the 4.7 releases were only ever hosted at Sunbelt's website.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. It seems the new company vaporized all the old stuff.
act8192, i'm not sure how to do that, maybe i don't have enough posts?

There is a Sunbelt firewall left to be used for free (some beta released via forum, before they were taken over), that can be used fo XP.I may still have it stored somewhere on my hard drive, but not sure if shaing is ok.

Can the configuration file for Kerio PF 2.1.5 be imported into version 4.7.5 of the Sunbelt firewall?

Sorry but... No. Not as far as I have been able to discover. To somewhat offset this disadvantage, the Sunbelt FW (SunFW) offers intrusion, HIPS. & behavior blocking capabilities which are over & above Kerio 2.1.5. By the way, the SunFW is just as light on cpu usage as the Kerio. BUT I never hesitate to recommend Kerio to XP users who want the utmost in a light, EASY-to-configure, effective FW. I like vanilla. Some folks prefer other, more intense flavors. Well & good, I say -- everyone has the inalienable right to be wrong, don't you agree? (^_^)

    @bellgamin,

Well hello there:) Very very nice to see your post here especially that you are asking about firewall. You are the one reason I got interested in Privatefirewall! Why not Privatefirewall instead..?

Had an issue with Kerio 2.1.5 firewall dealing with driver buffer size. Windows - Fatal application exit.
KPF driver buffer size needed to be increased (MaxBufferSize) so maybe this was a common problem.
Very good rule-based firewall for older OS and still used on XP.
