I have too agree on this. The Ashampoo Uninstaller programs used to be the only one's that did a snapshot b4 and after you installed a program (and just ran it once ). So in fact b4 installing a program you had to activate the Uninstaller so it could "monitor". Since a while Revo has this monitoring option too.

I think Ashampoo Uninstaller was at the time also the only program uninstaller that did these so-called pre and after snapshots. The latest Ashampoo Uninstaller5 looks only what is "added" to your OS while you're installing a program. IMHO it can never be as efficient as the previous versions, but it's a lot faster, since the previous versions had to take a full scan b4 you started any program installation.

How some Uninstaller programs that don't take snapshots are able to find leftovers is a mystery to me.

Anyone has some experience with the latest Ashampoo Uninstaller5, as I'm using it but am unaware if others perform better ?

@GuyD MicroHelp Uninstaller (which soon became CyberMedia Uninstaller and was later purchased by McAfee and renamed to McAfee Uninstaller) had install monitoring years before Ashampoo Uninstaller, but it was discontinued by McAfee many years ago.

I prefer Comodo Programs Manager as the monitoring is done automatically, but it has some issues and it no longer supported. But it is excellent when it is working properly.

Wasn't aware of that. It always seemed to me as Ashampoo Uninstaller was one of the first programs to use this kind of pre-after monitoring. Anyway it was one of the most known at the time. I've been using their Uninstaller for nearly a decade. But like I said their latest v5 is just monitoring what a program adds for files and what's been added to the registry. Even if at start I interupt an installation at the very beginning it's not even removing those few files

I had some issues with Comodo programs in general and they're lousy support. Since than I've stopped using anything from Commodo.

    Thanks 4 the info.

IObit Uninstaller 4.3.0.122 is out; no changelog available, the only change I noticed is the missing Advanced System Care bundle from setup.

Is it an installation file? It doesn't install resp. update. It directly opens IObit Uninstaller. It behaves like being a portable version. Strange.

Yes, that's the setup. On a system without IObit Uninstaller it installs normally just like any other setup package, into C:\Program Files\ ....

And now tell me how should I update if the file doesn't run the update, it only opens as another IObit instance. :-(

Why don't you uninstall IObit from Windows Control Panel and install the new version?

Yes, that's option but I never needed to do this before. I always run installer and it updated over the existing version.

The new version did install for me, replacing the previous release.

However, before I downloaded and launched the installer for the new version, I ran the installers for a few previous versions, and for those, it like others have expereinced, it just lauched IObit Uninstaller, and did not run the installer for it.

I'm pretty sure anything with monitoring or snapshot capabilities will remove both, if they are created during installation.

Total Uninstall gives you the option to run the software once, while still being monitored thereby detecting any registry changes made not by just the installation, but also first run.

    regards.

Are there any free open source uninstallers what work similarly to total uninstall?

Unfortunately there is nothing really opensource that will perform as good as the ones mentioned in this thread. To be honest, some opensource uninstallers are no better than the native windows uninstaller, and do not offer registry scanning.

That said, there are free alternatives such as Geek uninstaller. The paid having the ability to monitor installations. They both offer registry scanning after uninstall.

IMO stick with either Total Uninstall or Revo Unistaller for paid, or Iobit and Geek uninstaller for free.

    Regards

It's back to Comodo Programs Manager for me again, under Windows 10.

I was exeperincing a BSOD when installing some software, and figured it may have been due to leftovers from an incomplete uninstall of antivirus software. Using, RegDllView, I found some components of AV software (Tencent and others) which I had uninstalled that were still being loaded. I deleted the offending files, then install CPM again so that I can cleanly uninstall AV software I install in the future.

CPM works fine under Windows 10 if you set it to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode. I made a batch file to set all the exe files in the CPM folder under Program Files to Windows 7 compatibility mode. I have used CPM before under Windows 10, but when I did an inplace upgrade of Windows 10 to fix some problems I was having with Windows, CPM stopped working and I hadn't been bothered setting it back to Win 7 compatibility to get it working again.

For those that are interested, here are the contents of the batch file, which needs to run in the CPM folder to set the compatibility.
It is modified from an example I found at the superuser website. I had to modify it to get it to work.

Do this at your own risk, as CPM is no longer supported, and there a small chance you could experience CPM's boot loop bug, preventing Windows from booting.

It's been Revo for me. In some cases one can obtain a total uninstaller from the vendor's site.

    Always,

The new version of IObit Uninstaller is excellent in my opinion. IObit have added my suggestion of continuing an interupted install after a reboot. I haven't tested this yet to see if it works or not, but it's very good in theory, and gives a big advantage over Revo.

The new beta of IObit Uninstaller works very well.

I used the batch uninstall function to uninstall 22 programs. Many of the programs were able to be uninstalled without the need for any user confirmation due to the quick uninstall feature. The scan for leftovers is very fast, and it tooks just 53 seconds to scan for leftovers from the 22 programs that were uninstalled.

This is the changelog for the beta version.

I've just purchased a licence for REVO Uninstaller Pro. It was expensive (AU$81.90 for 3 machines) but it is a life-time licence available to upgrade to newer versions of 3.x, so I'm happy enough. It works better on my 64-Bit machine then the free version of 1.95.

I'm really impressed with how the new version of IObit Uninstaller can continue after a reboot. I started a batch install of 3 programs. The first app installed needed to reboot to finish the uninstallation, and I let it rboot my computer. After Windows restarted, I got a popup Window for IObit Uninstaller saying that there were 3 programs that had not finished being uninstalled. I selected the option to launch IObit Uninstaller again, and got the following popup after it launched, which let it continue where it had left off before the reboot, and unistall the two remaning apps, and the scan for leftovers for all three apps.
