Does the free version have real-time protection against PUPs or not? Everything on the free vs. pro page suggests it does.

Were you expecting more? i.e. was it a PC you knew to be infected?

I just tried out the program out of curiosity - quick scan was fast, but I can't tell how to bring up a log of the scan time. Haven't tested it on an actual infected machine.

Likely I won't be using this, as it's not a portable program and I don't need the realtime features myself. I'll still get family/friends to use the plain Unchecky, for just the original purpose of preventing bundleware.

The free version has no real time protection, but runs as trial of the full version for 30 days, and during that time you will have real time protection.

Your other option is to install the free build of Reason Core Security, which gets you the latest Unchecky, a program uninstaller, startup and browser extension managers, and on-demand malware scanning (real-time protection is reserved for the commercial version, priced from $29.99).

GRRRRRR I hate when good free programs are bought out by people who want you to pay for them now! Time to back up the unchecky exe......

There will be free version that has all the old + new, updated "Unchecky" features :) It's enhanced version of Unchecky.

I just hope it does not start with nagging users (popups etc).

So now on Unchecky will not be developed by the original developer & not be updated & available from Unchecky website?

That's what the greedy ~Possibly offensive phrase removed~ do. They don't have any ideas and just buy them.

Ironic to read this about Reason Security given the history of Andrew Newman...

He might be the exception that proves the rule. I don't know him.

    Why are you both panicking?

Unchecky will continue to be developed as a stand-alone program, and this was covered in the link given in the 3rd post of this thread.

You're right: much easier to libel people out of ignorance.

Oh well, if you ever decide to actually inform one of your opinions, then you'll understand why it's so unintentionally funny what you wrote about the founder of Reason Security.

I have run Malwarebytes, but have not done a comparison of the number of threats found. The installers it detected are for software I have chosen to download, and don't need really need removed. A number were detected due to being bundled with OpenCandy. OpenCandy is not an issue for me, as I'm careful to uncheck any extras when I install software. There were also installers of PUPs. Again, these are not a problem for me as I reguarly download and test PUPs.

Nah, I wasn't expecting anything - the FP itself is comical though. I've filed it to them and requested to remove the detection name altogether.

I've certainly found that the more security tools you have, the more likely that the heuristics of one of the malware scanners will find something interesting about at least one of the tools. Not to mention that often security tools and their drivers are unsigned, yet demand high level access to the system.

I see that you use MBAM and Emsisoft. Emsisoft is certainly a company that used to produce an exceptional number of FPs for me, but they've certainly improved a lot over the years. MBAM is not free of FPs, and recently wasn't very happy with my decision to use Software Policy (SSRP) on most of my machines. This required tedious whitelisting of every file and registry component of the software on each of my machines with that setup.

Emsisoft switched to BitDefender engine in 2012, which certainly dropped the amount of FPs. I've been only using EIS since February and MBAM since November last year, but I never get any FPs.

Do you know about the FP that I got? :D

I clicked on the name of the "threat" to get more information and it redirected me to a blank page.

When I uploaded that copy of the tool to VirusTotal earlier in the day, there was only one detection and it was a false positive from a Chinese AV. So it led me to wonder why they (Reason Software) got a detection name for it.

Anyhow, I uninstalled Reason Core Security for now. Will check back later once they improved their product.

FYI, the latest version of Reason Core Security released today comes bundled with Unchecky 0.3.7.4 (not available on Unchecky website as a standalone program).
