Target hires new CIO to repair damaged security cred

Target, which was hit last year by a massive data breach that left customers' personal information and credit card numbers open to hackers, has hired a new chief information officer to bolster its security.

Bob DeRodes will lead Target's information technology as executive vice president and CIO starting May 5, the mega-retailer announced Tuesday. In his new role, DeRodes will focus much of his work on improving the company's security apparatus. He'll also help to shape the company's long-term digital plans.[...]

Target's problem will look like peanuts soon after cash machines all over the USA ,which all run on Windows XP ,allow hackers to start stealing peeps bank accounts en masse. My underststanding is that the banking industry is making no significant effort to make the costly effort to upgrade the software running their cash machines. A disaster waiting to happen.

News that Target’s CEO Gregg Steinhafle is stepping down has prompted a flurry of reports from media outlets trying to recap events since the company announced a data breach on Dec. 19, 2013. Target Hires Former GM, GE Security Chief Brad Maiorino as New CISO

Target Corp. announced on Tuesday that it has hired Brad Maiorino as senior vice president and chief information security officer (CISO).

Maiorino will join the retailer on June 16 and will be responsible for the company's information security and technology risk strategy and report to CIO Bob DeRodes who was hired by the company in April.

Judge rules that banks can sue Target for 2013 credit card hack

On Tuesday, a District Court judge in Minnesota ruled [PDF] that a group of banks can proceed to sue Target for negligence in the December 2013 breach that resulted in the theft of 40 million consumer credit card numbers as well as personal information on 70 million customers. The banks alleged that Target had “failed to heed warning signs” that would have stymied the banks' losses.

Target had no choice other than to give a Motion to Dismiss a shot. Despite the fact that it's motion does not pass what lawyers refer to as "The Ho Ho Test," the judge's decision is extremely well reasoned and thorough. Target is screwed and it's screwing appears to be well deserved based on the know facts of this matter.
