So all those pirated XP copies that are currently installed in commercial businesses and government offices throughout the world are eligible for a free upgrade to W10 in the first year of release, if the hardware supports the upgrade and legacy apps are not an issue. It is sound business policy to try to get everyone onto a single platform to reduce support costs and to introduce a new and more lucrative business model, but there has to be a catch somewhere down the road for the non-genuine licenses. MS has 'no comment' on a possible backlash from their base of legitimate license holders ... all those commercial entities, OEMs and individuals.

It is always about market share and MS will no doubt see a massive spike in W10 licenses throughout the first year of release, mostly due to 'manufactured demand'. Since there are no new sales to drive, it is going to be interesting to see how the mainstream media handles this illusion.

No.

Edit:
Microsoft will let pirates update to Windows 10, but it likely still wants them to pay

I must apologize for misreading the article posted by anon, as regards to XP. I was wrong.

However, what does this mean? " speaking at the WinHEC conference yesterday, Myerson said that Windows 10 would be released "this summer" in 190 countries and 111 languages. He also announced that the Chinese companies Tencent and Qihu 360 would be giving away Windows 10 for free to its customers."

If the upgrade is free from MS anyway, what are these companies giving away for free on their own? I read it as a free W10 ligit license... just be a customer. Another misread on my part?

I'm having a Win7 desktop built this week.

I may buy an extra copy of Win7 Pro for future use.

What I think is that pirated editions will receive a one-time upgrade to Windows 10 and not be eligible for future updates and/or service packs or point releases (like Windows 10.1, for example).

Windows 10 Preview Build 10041 - Take a look

If you haven't had enough Windows 10, then here's some more. I've written another long, thorough review of Windows 10 Technical Preview, this time Build 10041, including fast-track updates, desktop look & feel, new icons, changes in Cortana and generic search, Store, Xbox, performance, battery life, minor customization, various problems, and more. Have fun.

Asked for a more specific speed assessment on a scale from 0 to 10, O'Brien says, “Let’s say Firefox is a 5, Chrome is a 6 ... Safari and Spartan would both probably be around 8 ½."

O'Brien also praises Spartan's rendering performance: "You know if they understand rendering well by things like anti-aliasing. So if I have a diagonal line on the screen, how pixelated does that thing look? On Spartan it looks really, really nice; on Firefox it looks really, really terrible ... [Spartan] passed all our tests and drew everything the way that we thought it should be drawn."....http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...rts-microsofts-new-spartan-browser-rocks.html

I received kb2990214 today as an optional update in windows updates. I never went to any windows 10 insiders preview website, nor did I ever click on any button that said "get the preview". I did not install the update and I am wondering why I got it and should I worry about any other windows 10 related updates sneaking up on me ? I hid the update. I am running 7 home premium and I don't want any windows 10 preview to some how appear on my computer......http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...deployed/8ce1a186-b3a1-45f2-9120-af7e0ece58bb

Then I'm out of ideas, sorry. Maybe Microsoft need more testers?

Quick question/s for those that are testing Windows 10 - do you have to join the Windows Insider Program to install W10? Any disadvantages of NOT joining?

Thanks.

They are pushing it hard in advance. While I have been testing Windows 10 since the beginning and I like it so far, I don't agree with how far out they are going to ensure that everybody upgrades. I've seen other reports of these updates being pushed as well.

I am not concerned about all these KBs that are analyzing my PC to see if my system is W10 compatible. If my PCs are candidates for W10 and a humongous KB shows up I am not obliged to download it as long as I have WU set to notify. I think a KB containing W10 via windows update will be easy to spot - the download size should give it away. Hopefully I am not being naive here, but I am not expecting MS to override my WU preference just to obliterate my ligit W7 licenses - if they did, they would be toast for sure. There has to be some T+Cs associated with the 1 year free upgrade period. W7/8 users should expect an extensive list of what-ifs to assure them that MS has taken all possibilities into consideration. A no-charge Q+A website manned with real experts would be a nice touch. I am particularly interested in knowing what a W7 OEM license is going to look like as a W10 license. Also I upgraded a Vista Bus/32 OEM license to W7/64 using an MS upgrade disc ... this was not a clean install. Upgrade over upgrade gives me the willies. This W10 for everyone is a 'bet your business' move and MS can not afford to bork this KB.

Windows 10 & privacy

I've scribbled down an important tutorial explaining how to tweak Windows 10 Technical Preview for maximum privacy settings, including local versus online account, Cortana AI search assistant settings, voice search and microphone settings, overall search settings, Bing personalization and advertisment, how to disable Web search using group policies, Classic Shell, and more. Have fun.

Does anyone know how long the technical preview lasts before you have to buy or reinstall?
