For this, I would say it comes down to functionality and the methods in which these different components work. The installed product itself would run a local proxy to intercept traffic on HTTP/HTTPS on 80/443 (potentially more to it) which would be system-wide in this case, working across browsers, email programs, RSS, etc. My assumption is that the extension-based Adguard may possibly have more ability when it comes to Element Hiding that may be more limited for the local proxy portion of the program. I can only assume that because if the original Adguard was thorough enough on it's own, they likely wouldn't have had the need to develop the additional extensions. But that is just my assumption only. For the most part it would come down to the needs of the individual users. But the developer would be better off answering your question from a technical perspective. I am also curious regarding your question as well. I have to be quite honest, I am very happy right now with my testing of Ad Muncher right now as well and being free is quite good. It seems to fix any web site visual issues created from my DNS-based adblocking as well as blocking lots of scripts and web bugs. I would assume it would compliment any users using Hosts files as well. I may try uBlock again one of these days as well.
I was just looking at my Yahoo Mail and i got a message from AGFW that said..Easylist China Filter was auto added to my filter list.
Normal behaviour. AG detects the most appropriate filters automatically. You can disable this in the settings.
Why would the China Filter be turned when i was looking at my Yahoo Email. I did not see anything about China in my Emails.
Most likely because there was a Chinese ad or a third party Chinese ad that AG detected and hence it loaded the chinese filter. IMO, it is a smart thing that I like.
You're close. Not proxy, we filter traffic on the driver-level and do not redirect it to a local proxy as it would lead to conflicts with some AVs. AG for Windows/Mac can do everything extension can do and more. Except one thing, browser extension is a great thing to manage AG right from your browser: http://adguard.com/en/adguard-adblock-browser-extension/integration-mode.html#integration-mode
Excellent, thank you for the detailed answer. I have a much better understanding of how Adguard works now. Also, the integration mode between browser and AG via the extension is also quite interesting and I understand the benefit there as well. avatar, you deserve the Wilders yellow Developer status here by now, for sure. How do we go about recommending that for you?
Admuncher is a 'fixer' of web pages. My UTM w/adblocking on will also break formatting at times, and Admuncher miraculously fixes them. I had deep anger for Admuncher for awhile - waiting for the cancelled version 5. But now I feel it's a worthy complimentary product to other adblocking products!
By the way, just curious, are you interested in server-side ad blocking product? I mean all this dns/squid/etc ad blocking quality is low and it's rather hard to set it up. Wouldn't you like to get something simple and with better quality?
To be honest, I've explored starting an SaaS adblocking company. But I am in a non-compete with my company, and don't really have the time. I think any company starting an SaaS type adblocking firm with a strong privacy policy is going to do very well.
Adguard my favorite right now seems to have improved alot glad you can add other filters now. Adblock plus and adblock both have weird freezing issues with youtube takes a few seconds to respond. Ublock is not blocking all my video ads. Adguard is not doing any of these things.
In my case, I enjoy a certain level of ad blocking within the router with OpenWrt and to allow the hardware to do most of the heavy lifting. Although I am considering either Adguard or Ad Muncher to compliment my DNS level filtering because it isn't perfect. I was hoping to take advantage of the Lifetime licence of Adguard with that 30% promotion, but I missed it as it ended just a few hours ago. When another promotion comes along for Adguard, I will hope to utilize that.
That's nice to know. I won an Adguard giveaway at Malwaretips, and thought it would be redundant to still have the addon. Nice to see that isn't exactly the case here.
