From my experience, Avast may not detect many PUP installers.
Instead, it does detect stuff that is downloaded/installed during the installation process.

So if suspicious PUP installer is not detected, it does not mean Avast does not detect stuff that gets installed :)

On my PCs Avast never showed PUP detection. I find that Emsisoft EK is good at PUP erasing.

I was getting daily pop-up of avast secureline after latest program update, so i uninstalled it.

I like avast, but hate pop-up ads :)

I'm like you, highly alergic to ads, if I see an ad my day is spoiled. That's why I don't use any free software be it an AV or normal programs. I always choose paid over free

Avast seems to be doing better, so I've re-enabled most of it. Hopefully won't have NG problems like before.

I used Avast! (free) for a few months last year when my Belnea notebook still ran Vista. Although I eventually replaced it with another AV, as it wasn't too compatible with Vista, I was impressed with Avast!'s ability to extract PUP's from downloads as they were happening. I ran KMPlayer for a little while but it tried to sting me with crapware on what seemed to be a routine update. Avast! detected and quarantined the downloading PUP's as KMPlayer upgraded.

I've just tested Avast against some Bing search result PUPs (with "noob" like searches) and it blocked everything there :)!

I'm pretty confident it has expired. Earlier I saw PCs with PUPs and Avast did not detect those. Recently, haven't seen single one :)

Just so people know,PUP detection needs to be turned on in avast!

It doesn't come on by default.

PUP's shouldn't be on for real-time imo. It's why my custom config for avast! only has it enabled for on-demand scans but not for real-time. This way installers that have stuff bundled don't get blocked, but you still can control if you want PUP's on your system or not when detected by quick scan or full scan. I mean, most installers have option to deselect toolbars and crap, so it's annoying to get them detected during download of thr program installer...

I think only the really bad kind of PUP's are detected though. Never had problems with most adware-bundled installers.

I prefer to have PUP's detection always enabled, and not waiting for an scheduler or on-demand scan to detect them...

Me too. One of the reasons is that 99% detections are accurate and users just download from wrong locations. Most of the time there's always a legit and clean installer available.

I do not consider Google Chrome or similar really a bad PUP, so those are not blocked in my experience. Only the ones that install real adware are blocked.

Now most of the free AVs have become annoying with ads, popups, etc... & no option to disable.
I tried Bd free but had some probs.
Tried Avast & ads in GUI, ads in popups, etc... Uninstalled it.

Others are there but with same annoying stuffs or not provide good protection.

Only Comodo & 360 TSE left.
Trying Comodo, you can disable stuffs that you find annoying.

Will see how it goes with Comodo, otherwise may give 360 TSE a try.

The ad inside avast! is the least of an annoyance out of ALL banners. I hardly even know it's there. However popups above taskbar are another thing...

I ran AIS 2 days ago....it seemed quite a bit lighter than 6 weeks back (beta)...at least browsing. It was a definite improvement.
