Regarding F-Prot for DOS, it is an old AV, no longer maintained. The database will be old, but most of the malware that infects 98 is just as old. It has no license requirements. The entire program used to fit on 3 floppy disks. Does the laptop have a working floppy drive? If you have a Windows 98 install CD, you can use it to boot to a copy of DOS contained on the CD, then load F-Prot from floppies. It should be possible to put it on a CD as well. I might still have a copy somewhere.

Regarding selective start, did you try disabling all of the options under selective startup? Was the keyboard error still present?

How much data are you trying to recover from this laptop? Regarding USB, a simple USB stick should work. Most likely, the laptops USB hardware is version 1.1. USB 2.0 wasn't available at that time. Some USB accessories don't work well with USB 1.1. USB sticks do wear out. They go bad a lot faster than external hard drives, especially when they are used to transfer a lot of data.

I don't have a Windows 98 install CD. I have a floppy disk but not sure if still working as my boot floppy disk doesn't work anymore. I don't know if it's the floppy disk drive or the floppy disk itself.

Yes, I already tried with all options disabled and unfortunately, the keyboard issue was still present.

I think the HDD is 12 Gb. Maybe I have 6 Gb. My USB pen drive version 1.1, the capacity is about 500 Mb. This USB pen drive not every time detected by OS, although I scanned and repaired for erros under my Vista OS, then I formatted into NTFS, then formatted into FAT32. But this not fixed the pen drive detection problem.

It might be easier to get a new pen drive in the 2-4Gb size range and use it to transfer files. It would definitely be the less expensive option.

Did you ever get Puppy to boot up on the laptop? If yes, did the keyboard work?

Yes, you are right but I already spent money for a USB adapter for HDD drive.

Not yet. Need to try it.

    @noone_particular :
I've just received my USB keyboard and this works perfectly. I've still have the same issue if I type with my original keyboard from my laptop.
If you have some instructions, let me know.

It appears to confirm that it is a hardware problem. I don't know if it's possible to service a laptop keyboard. I've never taken a laptop apart. If that's not possible, all you can really do is continue using the USB keyboard. Has it given you access to the files you were after?

What do you mean by 'I don't know if it's possible to service a laptop keyboard' ?
You said : 'Has it given you access to the files you were after?' Which files are you talking about ?
I'm not sure about hardware problem. On today, after starting a few times, and enter into my account. It opened automatically Internet Explorer, that sounds bizarre but it's true.

You said that the USB keyboard works perfectly. That tells me that the problem is in the laptops built in keyboard. I don't know if it is possible to repair a built in keyboard.
In post #3, you said that you wanted to recover data. I assumed that you meant specific files. Were you able to recover that data?

    Ok, thank you @noone_particular.

I bought an adapter for this hdd but unfortunately, this adapter was defective. So that, I bought a new one that I'm still waiting for the delivery. Then I will plug it into my Vista laptop and recover files to an external hdd.
