Yes they install auto update so that most users will always have latest version installed. Those that don't want auto update enabled are knowledgeable enough to disable scheduled tasks and services.

Wikipedia has offered encryption for a long time. I thought they had it as default, but I guess that's HTTPS Everywhere kicking in, an invaluable extension everyone should have.
It does, unfortunately, break a number of sites. Combined with a script blocker, it makes things difficult to figure out how to get a site to render properly. For example, I had to exclude Akamai in order for videos to play on NHL.com. It's the price one pays, I guess, for the additional security it provides.
That should probably be reported so that the akamai rule is disabled. I used to have a similar issue with YouTube embeds that embedded flash instead of HTML5, for some reason flash embeds over HTTPS failed, thankfully that's over.
