I have a thinkpad running win7-64 off an mSATA boot drive. I had hoped to convert the MBR to GPT using partition manager 14. After the conversion, the disk was unbootable. I tried the BIOS set to Legacy first or UEFI first, with no success. I ended up recovering by booting with Paragon recovery media, then converting back to MBR. The disk was still not bootable, but I then used a win7 install disk to do a repair. Any suggestions about how to do this?
Windows 7 won´t boot from a BIOS+GPT system, only from BIOS+MBR or UEFI+GPT (Windows 7 x64 only). Apart from the obvious, reinstall or reimage Windows 7 in the MBR disk, I don´t know of any other solution.
The problem is that while the program (HDM 15 Suite) offers to convert an MBR disk to GPT, it does not perform all the tasks necessary to render the drive bootable. It merely converts every partition to the type "Microsoft Basic Data Partition". I had an MBR drive with one 350M System Partition, and one 127G Windows-7 partition. Now I have an unbootable drive (and yes, I changed the BIOS to boot using UEFI). Paragon does not do a complete job, nor does it give me the tools to complete the job (I can't alter the partition types). Restoring my 2 partitions from backup (yes, I was careful to take a backup) still leaves the drive a GPT drive, which means it still won't boot. I would appreciate some help from Paragon on this! Or from other users, if anyone has a good suggestion. In the mean time, Paragon might want to put some heavy warnings in their manual that the conversion to GPT will only work with data drives (for now), and that boot drives will be left unbootable. Of course, converting a boot drive without having to resort to hex editing of sectors was the whole point of purchasing Paragon's program in the first place ... [From reading MS documentation, it seems it would not have too difficult for Paragon to carry out the missing steps for a successful conversion!]
