Why are Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) files unacceptable here?

    Hi

Earlier today I wanted to insert an image into a post I made here in Wilders but I soon discovered (I was notified!) that your 'system' would not accept Tiff files ....... and I simply wonder why that might be.

When using my Apple Mac, I don't seem to have any choice as to what file extension is added to any image I save - they are all saved as Tiff files (as far as I'm aware!). I did try changing the .tiff to .jpg and, although I could still open the file on my machine, it didn't view as expected when uploaded here. I've attached same to THIS post)

    I used Dropbox instead!

    Any comments appreciated. TIA

    Dave

TIFF is not a format commonly used on sites like this for image uploading and sharing. TIFF is more an image working and publishing format. It tends to produce very large sized files, which are also not great for upload and download on this kind of site. There can be issues with device compatibility on the display side, which means some people/devices may not be able to view those images.

A random site link with information about image format usage:

    http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/design/different-image-formats/

The information there appears to be the same as what is commonly accepted across the web. I just checked a number of other forums, including sites like Xenforo and vBulletin's own forums, and they don't allow TIFF format uploads either.

The image you did attach above is actually not in JPG format. It is still a TIFF file using LZW compression. The thumbnail can't render because of compatibility issues.

I can't advise you specifically as to how best to save or generate images on your system. I don't have that kind of system. But, JPG is the most universally supported format for uploading images, and it's best to try to generate that format for online posting.

Thank you very much for your research and helpful comments.

I'll pop over to the Apple support forums and see if they can provide any suggestions!

    Cheers! :thumb:
